Hey,

first of all. Don't get me wrong. This is not about politics. It's just a what-if discussion. Please do not patronize specific countries or political parties. Everyone has their own political opinion which is not to be debated here.

If Jagex sees this as too critical, feel free to lock it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

so yesterday it hit me. Spontaneously I thought "We are living now (2014/15) like the 1970s would have been without the World Wars."

I know this thought is not all that reasonable and realistic. But it's intriguing me. I can't help but wonder how far this world would already be without the World Wars, or even any of the Wars. Some Civil Wars might have been "necessary" to lead to more human rights and dignity, but i'm speaking especially about the international wars here.

I just thought that we would be far better off (understandingly) if we didn't have these wars. I know this sounds easily understandable, but i mean in a tremendous way. I feel like we are thrown years or even decades back . I feel like the nowadays 2010's years could have been the 1970's without the wars and that the future years, for example the 2030's could have already been in the 2000s. *

*TL;DR: Like technology or medicine invented in 2037 could of been invented in 2007 already.

So many innocents were lost due to the huge catastrophes caused by humans, innocents that could have developed technology or medicine that might be discovered in 30 years from now.

Do you comprehend what i mean? It's okay if you can't because of how we live today. But how would 2014/15 have been/be if there hadn't been especially those big wars? What is your opinion on that?

This is not solely about yourself, but about the entire world situation.

I apologize if this is a too controversial topic to discuss on an RS forum, I did not want to violate any rules or offend anyone.

I would be hesitant to assume that we would be any more developed than we are now. The threat of war has acted as a catalyst for a large number of technological advancements, and there would have been little incentive to develop them otherwise. People/societies who have never had to endure any sort of hardship become complacent, passive, even self-destructive. No cycle goes on forever, recession can be caused by many factors.

Except you forget that a lot of new technologies are/were made just for rushing towards being better than someone elses armies. Although random scientific discoveries probably could of occurred sooner as everyone would of had more free time and resources to pursue those things.

But if you think about it, most likely aviation got a huge boost in funding because if you had better planes you defenitly had the advantage. Without war, would we have created the fusion to create nuclear bombs which created nuclear powerplants which obviously creates tons of energy for people around the world? Who would of put effort into creating computers if it wasn't for governments trying to use them to crack codes and other things.

Yes as a race as a whole we would of been better off, but there are always benefits of war people don't like looking at. Such as the america economy has always been better off during war time than when they're not in war. The economic boost that came from all the wars they were in would of funded other researches that maybe never could of happened without it.

so because of the wars we are better off now regarding technology than we would have been without the wars and countries working together on technology?

Don't have much time to respond to this, but military history is like my #1 hobby (apart from RS, of course ^_^ ). It's false (sorry for not inviting debate on this point, it's just almost impractical to argue) to say that society would be more advanced if the WWs didn't happen and/or conflicts (military or ideological) didn't happen. So much (and I mean SO MUCH) technology that we take for granted these days are the direct result of military innovation. Some things were originally weapons, adapted years later by civilian scientists to better society. Other things were meant to be weapons but turned out to be a flop, so were passed to civilian hands very quickly, and developed that way so the military wouldn't have to waste more money on it. Other things still were developed not as a means of hurting anyone else, but to win an ideological war (space race between USA/USSR is the most used example, but there are others), and filtered down through society. Other things still were found completely by accident!

Really interesting topic that I look forward to reading/debating on (if it's allowed in these forums).

I find debating what if debates kinda pointless if you're talking about past events, anyway my two cents on the whole thing is that history has shown that most medical/scientific advancements have been made during war or were developped for use in war, in the medical field by all the trial and error patching up wounded soldiers, the tests nazi's did on the jews was extremely cruel but they did also give great insight in the human body, things like the computer, made for war, GPS, military technology, etc etc.
