The English language has its roots in German, French and Dutch with a liberal sprinkling of bastardized Latin derivatives. The "native" langue would have been one of the Celtic ones. But after having attempted and actual invasions roughly every 50 years you kind of pick up a bad habit or two and turn the tables if do learn anything. Hence the appearance of the British Empire.

History is a giant mess and everyone can point fingers at everyone else about something. I mean even the crusades were in response to enslavement and invasion from the east.
