Yeah, I guess I really am the only one keeping this thread alive. Well, at least it gives me something to do. This forum is mostly dead at this point anyway, so I hope people can forgive me for bumping this every now and then. Lol

Thoughts on the Spring 2018 anime season so far:

Beatless continues to... exist, I guess. I have no idea why the hell I keep watching this because it's about as mediocre as a show can get.

Black Clover has (surprisingly imo) gotten better and better. The most recent episode had me laughing so hard that I choked.

Dances with the Dragons is off to an okayish start. The story seems kind of average, but it at least has the potential to be something better. Hope it does exactly that instead of just fizzling out in the end.

Darling in the FranXX is developing pretty much exactly how I thought it would. Still really enjoying it.

Devils Line may seriously be one of the most badly-written shows that I've ever had the displeasure of watching. The fact that ANYONE would enjoy a series with a plot like this honestly just depresses the hell out of me. Heavy spoilers:
I mean, seriously. Having a huge portion of the plot revolve around the fact that vampires get super lustful in a not-so-consensual way is about as trashy as a plot can get. The hurt/comfort plot elements are also a big "no no" for me, as is the fact that the main character's love interest is basically a super creepy stalker.

Dorei-Ku is definitely my guilty pleasure of the season. The writing leaves a bit to be desired, but I can dig the dark plot.

Golden Kamuy is probably my #1 new show of the season. Just an absolute joy to watch and I eagerly look forward to every new episode.

High School DxD's fourth season is off to a good start. Anime-only fans be damned, having the show switch studios was 100% necessary. Season 3 was a travesty that butchered the source material, so I look forward to seeing the story fixed this season.

Hitori no Shita's second season has continued to be pretty entertaining. I worry about its potential to get a full adaptation considering it's a Haoliners series, but my fingers are crossed that we at least get another season.

Magical Girl Site has to be the edgiest thing to have come out of Japan in years. Terrible series through and through, but the antagonist having the same Japanese voice actor as Frieza is keeping me at least a little bit interested.

My Hero Academia's third season is another highlight of my season. This is already one of my all-time favorite series and this season in particular will give some screen time to my favorite character from the manga, so I'm really pumped to see her.

Record of Grancrest War continues to be okayish. It's at least been entertaining enough to keep up with.

Sword Art Online: Gun Gale Alternative... I have to give it credit for being better than first/original series. Sorry to the people that like it, but I have a LOT of complaints with some of the decisions the author made (some of which were made multiple times, at that). Really hope this series doesn't repeat any of those issues because it's off to a good start.

Still need to watch more of Gegege no Kitarou, but I at least liked the first episode.

Haven't watched Cutie Honey Universe at all yet, but it's on my "give a shot when I can" list.

I plan to marathon all of Steins;Gate 0 after its run finishes. Steins;Gate is one of those shows that I just don't enjoy in a weekly format, but I'm sure I'll dig 0 when I finally plow through it.

Mostly agree, but that I felt that prequel episode 0 was a bit short for the purpose of retconning multiple episodes from season 3 as well as to bring the non-readers up to speed.

I wonder if this new studio wants to produce several seasons, as it seems a bit weird to pick it up for a 4th season when these sort of shows don't tend to last for that many seasons before being cancelled.

Aside from that I've started Shokugeki no Souma, and the past season I only read Violet Evergarden. :7

I do wish that they had spent more time on the retconning (I'd prefer a complete redo of Season 3 tbh), but at the same time... there's probably only so much they can do, so I've made peace with it in the hopes that it'll more than make up for it in the long run.

There's probably a good chance that they'll produce multiple seasons. DxD is insanely popular both in Japan and in western countries, so I don't really see any reason for why they wouldn't continue adapting it for the time being. My main worry is about whether or not we'll get a full adaptation. Genres and stuff like that aside, a big issue is the overall length of the series. Season 4 will only adapt Volumes 9 and 10, for example. Considering that the novels are twenty-five volumes long and counting... the studio would really have to strap themselves in for the long haul to adapt the entire thing. We're talking what could/would probably be 200+ episodes in the long run, which is rare for any series. :/

Yeah, the length was the reason why the decision to end it after volume 25 and make a sequel series titled "Shin Hischool Dxd" was taken too, I believe. Similiar to what Toaru Majutsu no Index did.

Doubt Passione will be adapting the entire thing into anime (though I wouldn't mind as the later volumes are better than the earlier imo) :P

Agreed. I don't really mind the fanservice and stuff since it's part of what got me into the series in the first place, but one reason for why I frequently recommend the light novels to people is because of how they eventually reach a point where most of the fanservice is replaced by serious plot, world building, action sequences, and other stuff like that. It's a pretty good fantasy series overall, so I'd love to see them animate as much of it as they can.

Time for another bumparoo of this animoo discussion. Maybe one day this thread will start to see some life again... Lol.

Shows I'm currently loving:
Grand Blue - Basically College Life: The Anime Series. I think this is easily the funniest show so far this year. Haven't enjoyed a comedy series this much since KonoSuba and Shimoneta aired.

Back Street Girls - Not quite as funny as Grand Blue, but still surprisingly decent. The plot's pretty unique, so I've gotta give it props for that.

Angolmois - I'm always down for a good war series. Pretty much my only complaint thus far is the animation style they went with (I could do without the fog filter).

Hanebado - I usually HAAAAATE sports series and I never thought I'd enjoy a series about badminton, but this one has been an absolute treat. Loving every minute of it.

Attack on Titan Season 3 - I'm always down for more AoT. Not much else to say there.

My Hero Academia Season 3 - Same criteria as AoT.

Overlord Season 3 - This season will cover what's widely considered to be the best part of the light novels (given the current pacing, we'll move into that volume in about two weeks), so I'm pretty hyped for that. I'm really not a fan of how much they rushed their adaptation of Volume 7 since that was my favorite novel from the first half of the series, but hopefully the five episodes that'll be devoted to Volume 9 will be worth that sacrifice.

Shows I'm at least enjoying enough to keep up with:

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord - Surprisingly enjoyable given the massive amount of time that it devotes to blatant fanservice. Action sequences and jokes have been decent enough. At least it's not as generic as some of the other shows we got this season.

Planet With - Seems okay enough at first glance, but I'm very worried about how it's going to end since it's only slated for twelve episodes. Chances are the ending is gonna be a crapshoot, but we'll see.

The Master of Ragnarok and Blesser of Einherjar - Honestly pretty mediocre as far as writing and animation go. Mainly watching it since it's at least enjoyable enough to serve as a time killer.

Lord of Vermillion - Same criteria as Master of Ragnarok.

Happy Sugar Life - I REALLY hated the way the first episode presented things since the presentation of Satou's feelings toward Shio made the author look a lot creepier than the character, but forced myself to tough it out in the hope that it was just a bad first impression. Series has gotten better as it's gone on. Won't be winning any awards or anything, but it's okay enough.
__

Still keeping up with One Piece and will continue to do so for as long as the anime adaptation exists.

Still keeping up with Black Clover since I hope/assume it'll become a long-runner given Pierrot's history with shonen series like Naruto and Bleach.
__

Dropped several shows early on. A lot of shows that initially seemed promising (such as Angels of Death) wound up being a lot more terrible than the initial hype led me to believe.

Long overdue response from me. I'm watching a LOT of shows this season, so I'll just touch on my favorites.

Karakuri Circus - This may honestly be the highlight of the year for me, so I'm disappointed as hell that Amazon grabbed it (it won't get the exposure it really deserves and I'm not very hopeful in it ever getting a dub). It's reminicent of a lot of series from the 90s (makes sense since that was when the manga started) and it's definitely got a nostalgic feeling going for it. Written by the same guy who wrote Ushio and Tora, too. Anyone who liked that show, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, and/or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure will probably enjoy it. It's also getting a full adaptation.

Hinomaru Sumo - Not a 90s series, but the animation style and tone are very reminiscent of them. I normally hate sports series and I can't say I've ever had any interest in sumo wrestling, but this series has been absolutely fantastic. This one's getting twenty-four episodes, so I'll get to enjoy it next season too.

SSSS.Gridman - I'm a lifelong fan of tokusatsu shows (stuff like Super Sentai/Power Rangers, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman) and this one is a very rare example of one of those being turned into an anime series, so I'm digging it.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime - A very good example of the fact that isekai series CAN still be decent. I'm a fan of the light novels and I'm conflicted about the way some things have been adapted (some stuff was done better than it was in the novels, other stuff was kind of ruined imo), but for the most part it's been a pretty enjoyable adaptation.

Post continued on next page.
