Shakugan no Shana 2 on hold atm

If I recall correctly second season of that starts off a bit slow, but it picks up after a while.
Also I think I watched that on Kissanime where subtitles of the first and second seasons were done by different people, which was a bit annoying as they had chosen to leave some words in Japanese while the other had translated them to English.

A new season has been upon us for a little while now, so I figure it's time for a seasonal update.

The Ancient Magus' Bride is an 11/10 for me. At least in my case, this seems like a complete repeat of what I went through with Izetta. Went in without any knowledge of what the series was about and was immediately blown away by the quality of both the writing and the animation. Assuming it keeps this up, it'll easily be my favorite show of the year.

Inuyashiki is in much the same boat as the above series. The first episode was decent enough, but after the second one? I'm hooked. That episode contained one of the most surprising and entertaining sequence of both events and dialogue that I've seen a series have in several years. I loathe Amazon's bs double paywall, but much like Re:Creators this series has been so great so far that I'm sucking it up and paying to watch it anyway.

Zodiac War is okay enough. Basically a watered down version of the Fate franchise in the sense that it has a similar plot/tone, but clocks in at half the length. The ending is likely going to make or break this one.

King's Game...again, it's okay enough. Not great, but it definitely delivers on the gore. Sort of comes across as a mix of Battle Royale, The Lost Village, and Corpse Party all rolled into one.

Dies Irae... added onto the above two, I guess this is the edgiest season we've had in a while. I like what I've seen so far, at least. Lol

Black Clover has been a huge disappointment for me. It's not bad, exactly, but the hype this series got before it aired made me think it was gonna be one of the best shows we've had in years. Instead, we got a plot that could literally just be summarized as "Magic Naruto wants to be the Magic Hokage". People keep telling me the series will get a lot better a couple of arcs from now, but as far as first impressions go I can't say I'm thrilled about what I've seen. Seems like a 6/10 at best right now.

That's about it for the new stuff.

Long-runners:
I'm a little behind on One Piece. Got super behind early this year, got caught up to somewhere around Episode 800, then got behind again. Digging the adaptation of the current arc, in any case.

Dragon Ball Super's current arc seems decent enough.
I'm loving every single moment of screen time that Caulifla gets. I have a feeling Toriyama is going to find a way to give Universe 6 a happy ending and I really hope that feeling isn't misplaced. I really want all of the main characters from that universe to stick around, but the main one is Caulifla. I waited twenty years for a female Saiyan and Toriyama definitely delivered when he gave us someone as entertaining and badass as Caulifla. My heart can't take having her erased.

Holdovers:
Fate/Apocrypha is still giving me mixed signals. I like it well enough, but at the same time I definitely think that it still leaves a bit to be desired when compared to both Fate/Zero and Unlimited Blade Works.

Youkai Apartment continues to be a guilty pleasure. I normally hate shows that are heavily slice of life, but I enjoy every minute of this one.

Toonami:
Love it, love everything about it. Well, except Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 2 (heavy spoilers):
I loved Season 1 to death and I was one of the many people begging for a second season, but I can admit that I eventually came to regret it. I'm all for an occasional sad event or two, but Season 2 was just flat-out depressing. Don't even get me started on the ending. I get why it ended the way that it did and I'm not saying it was bad, but I HATE when shows end on such a bittersweet tone. Just not my cup of tea at all.

Dunno if anyone still reads this, but here:

https://jojocomparisons.github.io/

I think this is super interesting. It appears to be someone who literally compares two different versions of JoJo's - the TV airing and the disc (?) version of JoJo's. The animation of the two versions is just... insanely different. It's usually frame-by-frame. Some of the "episodes" are gifs, though.

Winter 2018 season has started. Still going through everything right now, but early impressions:

I'm a HUGE fan of the Overlord light novels (current with the Japanese releases and I buy every single English one). A complaint I had back during Season 1 was that the anime series leaves out a good 50% of the content contained within the light novels (removed almost all backstory for various characters, heavily toned down the gore, changed some scenes a bit, etc.), but I did still enjoy it because for the most part it was still faithful to the direction they were going in. I'm super hyped for Season 2 and really hope we'll eventually get a Season 3, Season 4, etc.

Record of Grancrest War is off to an okay start. I think they rushed the first episode's pacing a lot more than they should have, but the series does have an interesting premise. I noticed that it's also based on a light novel series, so I'm hoping a company like Yen Press eventually licenses it for an English release. Seems like the type of thing I'd enjoy reading.

Violet Evergarden... not sure what to make of this one so far. Seems enjoyable enough, but only time will tell if the genres for it are my cup of tea or not.

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody... just ugh. I like the isekai genre, don't get me wrong. I've been a huge fan of it ever since the early days of the .hack franchise. Even so, I'm really not digging the whole "almost every new isekai series we get is going to revolve around a Gary Stu that looks just like Kirito from Sword Art Online" issue. It's taking a genre that I once loved and destroying it more and more with every new season.

Hitori no Shita... first season was kind of all over the place, but it was okay enough overall that I stuck with it. Super surprised (in a good way!) to see that Haoliners gave it a second season since they have an awful reputation of only doing one for most shows. Glad that we may get to see the arc that the first season was building up to.

And lastly (for now), there's Kokkoku. I honestly don't know what to make of this one. Will probably take another two or three episodes before I have any solid impression of it.

Edit/Update to cover more premieres:
Soul Hunter's premiere may be the single worst premiere that I've ever seen a new series have. It felt like they tried to cram an entire season's worth of content into a single episode, making it more similar to what you'd expect from a recap than an actual first episode. If the second episode's pacing is even remotely as bad as the first one's was, I'll be dropping it indefinitely.

Hakata Pork Bones Ramen's first episode was... different, I guess? The whole "city full of hitmen" thing seems interesting enough.

Killing Bites was a lot better than I was expecting. I know it's probably not going to be some 10/10 series or anything like that, but as far as fanservice and gore go... it's okay enough. Will call this my guilty pleasure of the season.

Really not sure what to make of Beatless so far, but I did enjoy the first episode.

I haven't watched Seven Deadly Sins since the first season initially aired, so I'm gonna hold off on Season 2 of that one for now. I need to rewatch all of the older episodes first, otherwise I'm gonna be super lost.

Similar statement goes for Basilisk. Haven't watched that in years, so I'm gonna need a refresher before jumping into the new season.

I think that's all the new stuff I was really interested in this season. Aside from that, I'm still tuning into long-runners like One Piece, Dragon Ball Super, and Boruto. Also still watching most of what airs on Toonami.

Continued thoughts on the Winter 2018 season (this thread and subforum may be mostly dead, but hey, someone's gotta keep things going)...

Kokkoku has gotten much more interesting since the last time I posted. I still have a really hard time putting my feelings into words, but the short version? The story is pretty unique and it's quickly become one of my favorite shows of the season.

I could make a similar statement for Hakata.

I completely forgot to mention Darling in the FranXX, but I'm thoroughly enjoying every minute of it.

Violet Evergarden is definitely a quality series, but at the same time... I'm considering dropping it. Shows that are largely bittersweet really aren't my cup of tea. I like watching stuff to build up my good mood, not to have my good mood torn down.

Black Clover has gotten a bit better as time has gone on, but I still stand by what I said about it a while back. I mean, it's enjoyable and all, but there are so many shows that are so, so much better. I just don't understand the hype surrounding it.
