more important when can i get a robot girlfriend
Aww, I'm sure there's a someone out there you might not have met yet who you'll have a great time with. There's a lot of people in the world, and the more people you meet, the higher your chances of finding them!

Thanks for the link! I really enjoyed reading it
I got recommended by a friend recently to read the series but I hadn't found the time to read more than the first 3 books. I hope I'll be able to find the time to read the rest.
When something becomes greater than the sum of its parts we may be looking at the building blocks of what makes consciousness. Sort of like panpsychism or a different spin on it.
Kind of light reading for this topic but it touches on some interesting theories.

What is consciousness? What makes us conscious?
The old age question. Very interesting to think about, though. I, myself don't know. Is it the brain? Is it something else? There's so many questions to ask about it with no real answer. It's all just theories right now. Will we ever find out the answer? I hope we do in our lifetime.

What would a computer with consciousness do?
Depends how well it simulates consciousness. Since we lack the understanding, surely it wouldn't simulate it very well? There's risks associated with creating such a thing. What would it think of us? We, as a species, are not exactly good. We wouldn't be setting a good example for any machine that becomes aware of its surroundings. I kind of hope we don't create anything along that nature just yet, not until we change the way we are as a species. We have a lot of changing to do before we try bringing new intelligent "life" into the world.

If you believe it is possible, why do you think it hasn't been done yet? (has it been done yet?)
I don't think it will be possible until we understand just what consciousness is. We still don't know. We're clueless about it. We only have theories to go on and that won't help much when trying to simulate something as complex as consciousness.
At the very least, we'll probably get intelligent A.Is in our life time that will really blow our minds. Hell, maybe they'd wipe us out before we even get to "installing" consciousness into their brains.
This is a dangerous territory regardless. We're putting our dominance over the planet on the line. Are we ready to give it up just yet?!

Ooh wow, thanks for sharing that link! I found a lot of Koch's comments fascinating, especially when he compares the collective consciousness of two people engaged in a conversation compared to the consciousness within a single brain.
I like the way you put it - the way it reduces the problem makes me curious about what the minimum set of parts are for something to start showing something that mimics human consciousness.
Google's DeepMind created an interesting milestone in AI research earlier this week by giving neural networks a way to use memory.
This gives it the ability to solve a greater range of problems, and can be compared to gaining the ability to do simple deduction where it could only act on instinct previously.
I think this is an exciting improvement, and look forward to seeing further improvements and new applications
damn I was going to make some comment on how getting some 170 iq autist to solve P=NP isn't an explicit requirement for developing O(n^1000) algorithms to create robot overlords then I looked at when this thread was made
