Placed the first order for my build today! I've budgeted it out so that things should be done ordering in the next 2 months. Going to be epic.

Computer specs:
MSI Z170A Krait Gaming
Intel i7 6700K w/ watercooling
Nvidia GeForce GTX970
16 GB Corsair VENGEANCE LPX RED DDR4 2133Mhz
600W, BeQuiet Kraft
250 GB, SSD Samsungs 850-series
3000 GB, 7200rpm, 64MB Cache

Why get a 6700k? 4790k is literally an equivalent, infact 4790k is more on the performance end. The only area 6700 excels in is integrated graphics, but no one even uses that. And 4790k is like $100 cheaper. You're basically paying for haswell vs skylake. And watercooling is pretty pointless on that unless you're planning on getting a lot more later or just wanted to say you had something watercooled. You have a ton of room before heat will be an issue that fans can't easily keep up with, even if it's 120F outside, unless your case is the size of a shoebox.

I'm not really trashing on the choice, I'm just curious why you chose it when there's obvious better and cheaper options.

I wouldn't say a 4790k is better than a 6700k; it's just cheaper and therefore more performance for your money - a 6700k is better than a 4790k, performance considered. I believe a 6700k has the same amount of PCI-e lanes but it has DMI 3 compared to DMI 2, so the lanes coming from the PLX chip (which is 20 for Z170 I believe) will be even faster, which is great for new storage solutions, however a bit overkill for anything that's considered consumer at the moment.

I would have personally gone for a 5820k with X99 over 6700k with Z170 if I was spending that sort of money, but if you are on a "budget", a 4790k with Z97 would be cheaper, however you do lose a better iGPU (of which I would have found really, really useful myself, but that is mainly because Haswell-E has no iGPU which is a pain in the arse when trouble shooting, or when you have to go some time without a GPU, it's nice to have a backup), some PCI-e lanes (arguably not a factor), better IPC and DDR4 RAM - the latter of which is something worth considering if you are future proofing. I believe Skylake processors also have reverse hyperthreading, which is nice for people who don't have multithreaded workloads.

As for iGPU, DX12 will be able to utilise multiple GPUs, regardless of manufacturer too, so if a DX12 game is too heavy for your graphics card, you could offload some to an inbuilt GPU too I believe? Not sure if it's discrete cards only, I haven't read too much into it.

6700k is great, it's new and shiny, however, seems a bit wasteful to get a "k" series Skylake processor considering recent news :p

e: PCI-e lanes matter a lot if you deem yourself an enthusiast and want the performance from PCI-e based storage, aka me, but I can see where you are coming from by suggesting 4790k/Z97.

As for watercooling, I have yet to see an air cooler with nice aesthetics so I can see why people would go for a loop, necessary or not - Or even an AIO as there are some compelling choices now.

Funny that you mentioned 5820, all 3 of those cpu's are argued on which one is better. 6700 and 4790 are neck and neck with each other in absolutely everything apart from gaming which 4790 does actually come out ahead in (which could be because of 6700 being newer and not being fully optimized but the point remains), there's simply no reason at all to get a 6700 regardless of new and shiny because by the time they work the kinks out an actual better one will come along. The 5820 excels in stuff like rendering, but not in gaming because most games don't use 6 cores to begin with and the cores on 4790 are stronger per core.

So 5820 would be more of a questionable one for what you're actually going to use it for, but 6700 and 4790 there's no doubt.
