Academic Survey - The Characteristics of Massively Multiplayer Online Gamers.

I am third-year Psychology undergraduate student at Middlesex University, London, investigating the characteristics of Massively Multiplayer Online Gamers for my dissertation project.

To do this, I have created a survey investigating various aspects of MMO game play, including motivations, gaming habits and relationships. As an MMO player, you may be interested in taking part!

The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

The survey can be found at the following link: https://mdxl.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5mSPLgOT1Md27w9

All information you provide will be done so 100% anonymously and will be kept confidential. The survey has been given approval by Middlesex University's ethics board.

If you have any questions regarding the study, emails of all researchers and supervisors are provided at the start and end of the survey.

Please feel free to forward the survey link to any MMO gamer you know who may be interested in taking part.

Finally, for those interested in the completed project, summaries of the findings may be obtained from 4th May 2016 onwards, upon request.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, your participation being greatly appreciated.

the question about ethnicity puzzles me, while i live in the uk, i am from australia, so i assume id be of english ethnicity....?

~edit~

meh ill pass, some of the questions seem to be oddly worded or have a skewed intention, though im not against studys and trying to find out information, the kind of information this survey appears to be trying to pull isnt hmm, something i think would display said community in a positive light

Thank you for completing the survey! I'm sorry that parts of it made you feel uncomfortable. Although you didn't specify which parts did so, I'm guessing it was some of the questions related to your opinions of people you know? Those questions came directly from a well-known and widely used tool to measure Attraction. But I completely understand how, depending on who you've chosen to answer questions about, the questions might be hilariously awkward!

Thank you for taking the time to comment about your concerns. With regards to the ethnicity response options, I can see how they might be confusing for some, sorry. They're actually a standard UK Government way to differentiate between ethnicities, although that of course does not downplay your confusion or mean that the categories are perfectly applicable to all. I completely understand, sorry again.

The survey was mostly comprised of several pre-existing tools measuring various factors believed to be related to MMO Gamer Characteristics. All of these tools have been used in previous studies regarding Gamers, some of them in a positive tone, some of them not. I'm happy that you're concerned about displaying the community in a positive light, I am too. As are both of my supervisors and my two group members. Because of that, I can assure you that the literature involved in the final analysis of the data will be done so as unbiasedly as possible, as well any personal interpretations of trends in my own data. There is an awful lot of literature out there quite clearly negatively bias towards gamers, you're right.

@Sharkbunnie

if thats the case ill take another look and post if i find any of the other questions strange

in regards to

I see myself as:
why do you ask questions with specific character traits that can vary wildly?

for example id strongly agree that im disorganised, but id strongly disagree that im careless, so in this case if they are equally exact opposites do you put the middle?

when it comes down to these kind of things, the ones im used to are australian and there wording would have been something like

"below are sets of 2 examples, please indicate the traits that applys to you, and if they are opposed, please indicate towards the one that is more applicable to you"
