@Nattie,
I'm not sure how to go about this, so I have posted a four variations. I have made them so you'll see how they appear on the forums. Without white border to make avatar slightly larger, soft and hard edges on borders, etc.

Edit: @Blasty I noticed that pattern too, it's subtle but nice. Tricky image to make into an avatar. I'm sure that between the two of us we'll get something suitable for Nattie
