The way custom avatars work is wonderfully simple - they add an "invisible" code to the end of your post, which is actually a blank quickfind code - the page number is actually your avatar code and Linkify takes that code, and overrides your avatar if it sees it at the end of your post.
For instance, this is AoDude's avatar's code:
[code][qfc id=14-15 page=10780][/qfc][/code]
So no, changing your RSN won't break it, but removing that code will
There are custom titles (which I have no idea how they work, so I'm going to assume witchcraft), but those do break if you change RSN.

Bouncing off Quavelen's post, I actually came in here to wonder if it were possible to disallow a certain user's custom avatar but leave them on for everyone else?
This isn't a serious issue, I'm just curious
