Bill Gates (of all people) has been warning about the dangers of a flu-like pandemic for a while now.

There is one area, though, where the world isn’t making much progress, and that’s pandemic preparedness. This should concern us all, because if history has taught us anything, it’s that there will be another deadly global pandemic...
In the real world, though, the health infrastructure we have for normal times breaks down very rapidly during major infectious disease outbreaks. This is especially true in poor countries. But even in the U.S., our response to a pandemic or widespread bioterror attack would be insufficient.

Things are starting to heat up here in Oz. There's rumours that they will soon shut schools. However, teachers are expected to maintain instruction via tele-teaching.
Good - I would love to teach my classes in my PJ's.
11 known cases of Covid-19 where I live. Doesn't sound like much, but that's factoring in that I live in a tiny country. More than 150 people are quarantined too waiting for test results for the virus to come back from the lab.
grocery store here is rationing food now. like not even trying to get stupid amounts of food, just what we normally buy, and have to get less than normal
Going by UK Govt advice I should be self-isolating as I'm in the high risk group for death if I catch it. Impossible to self-isolate when one cannot get enough basic food for a week, never mind 12 weeks, because panic buying has stripped the shops bare.
It started with toilet paper (of all things!) but now there's no eggs, pasta, rice, tinned or frozen vegetables to be had and very little meat.
Supermarkets are talking big about how customers can only buy 2 or 3 of each item but they are just talking - still seeing people laden with trolley fulls of, say, packets of pasta. So full, literally toppling off the top onto the floor. And the checkouts just put them through without a word. Nothing left for whoever gets there after them. Fucking ridiculous.
I've tried home deliveries and they turn up with one or two items because the other stuff is "out of stock".
There's to be a 3 month amnesty for people who cannot pay their mortgage due to being laid off or too sick to work, but no help at all yet announced for the millions of people who are on the lower end of the scale who rent their home. So I guess there'll be a lot of homeless and hungry people on the streets of the UK by the end of the Summer.
I don't doubt there will be looting, eventually, and civil disorder. Things are not looking good.
