And this all ties in with how negatively the community reacts on social media, thereby negatively advertising rs3. We seem to also have a number of osrs players who post a disproportionate amount of negative views on rs3, despite not playing it anymore (by which they ironically hurt the foundation of osrs as well).

Combine all of this, and it is not a surprise we have difficulty retaining old players and attracting new ones. I mean it even demotivates me and probably a lot of developers. Despite rs3 being a solid game, with developers putting their heart into the updates (just look at elite dungeons and player owned farms). The latest update of achievements, despite not adding new bosses or quests, has been great to replay (the gigantic amount) existing content with the twist of unlocking feats while doing so.

It is frustrating to see Jagex try to address all of the above problems, yet still being unsuccessful. Especially when it concerns matters like MTX of which I voiced my concerns way back in 2012 when they were first introduced (with the young me not being as eloquent about it as I am now: many Caps were used…).

Of all the above issues, I would propose focusing on fixing the rampant MTX and rethinking the membership pricing, while allowing more of the profit to be cycled back into the game (even though that means a tough battle with the Chinese investment company). I mean let us be harsh here: this is not a triple A game and as such we can not expect new players to join it with the current prices. Even with an introduction of mobile.

We can not do much about the age this game shows, at least not to the extent to where it matches with newly released games. While a lot of focus has been on making changes in the development process, there is only so much you can do: you can not exactly predict how new updates will pan out. I think this is something that has to be accepted instead of becoming a point of frustration by developers and the community (though again, processes like these are not completely under ones control).

We can invest into making the start of the game enticing to new players, hence increasing the chance they will be interesting in joining the community. I hope this is being done actively, though as a veteran I can not give comments on this: you need to poll the experiences of newer players.

By doing the above you might change public perception, though again there isn’t much more one can do to control this: my fear is that the opinion of a group of osrs people is reinforced due to them having created their own echo chamber, with outside influence having little effect (they simply do not try rs3). I hope those people will not spread negativity when mobile is released, but we will see.

In the end I truly hope the best for this game and will be playing the content for what it is: a lot of fun.

Undoing a change made in 2012 (EoC) is not going to magically fix RS3. It's not even the game's biggest problem any more. It's improved quite significantly over its release (it was messy, everyone pretty much admits that). It still has its issues, but it's nowhere near as bad as it once was.

The biggest issues that let the game down are:

1) Micro-transactions - probably the biggest one. People absolutely despise this: paying more real cash to access more content and/or get further ahead. It's why it's hated. Yeah, you can pay with micro-transaction content via virtual currency, but that wouldn't be possible if it didn't come from real cash first. They'd never have made TH for RS GP only. It only works because real money is the supply (for bonds that gives people the ability to buy micro-transaction currency with virtual wealth).

Getting rid of this will likely draw back so many people. It's the destroyer of games.

2) Update quality - it's been lacking a lot lately. The last content that engaged me was Telos and that came out in 2016. I still interact with it to this day and ignore pretty much everything else. Nothing better has come out for me yet and I'm probably not the only player that thinks this. Can you think of anything of relevance to mention about the years 2017 and 2018 in terms of updates? I can't. Nothing big anyway. Nothing that says to new people, or OSRS players, "Holy fuck I should play this to try that".

3) Advertising - Do you see this game advertised anywhere? Nope. It doesn't even have a large presence on Twitch. Since the OSRS streamers moved to their own category, RS3 dropped significantly because it barely draws any viewers, thus is almost at the bottom of the "Browse" section.

OSRS gets a lot more advertising done through Twitch (their tournaments help loads) and the recent Mobile. Bound to get more people from that.

RS3 shows no effort to attract new people. That's why it's dead and lifeless in comparison. Not because of EoC.

In the recently released runescape documentary jagex calls EOC a mistake.
It is a very nice documentary btw, definitely worth watching. This also more or less explains their current handling of the situation and management of rs3.
Now that jagex has admitted it was a mistake my crusade has come to an end I guess.
I don't think there is a way to reverse what has been done and rs3 has gained its own fanbase (ailbeit small) by now and I wouldn't want all the people still playing and having fun to experience the same change that others had to experience.

Nice documentary!

The
release of
EOC was a mistake, not EOC itself. EOC was a necessary change to modernise the game but it was executed poorly. Its part of the reason why M&S is taking so long because they don't want another extremely huge update to go wrong again.

Very simple....

If RS3 dies.. and I hope it doesnt I love the graphics and even the solomons cosmetics.

And I think when Mobile comes out for RS3 there will be a influx of players.

But

IF RS3 dies.. do the OSRS players really really think that Jagex is gonna just say
oh lets forget about all that money we got from Treasure hunter and solomons.

Lets just rely on bonds and membership?

IF OSRS players really think that is how Jagex will think then OSRS is really living
in a fantasy world.

If RS3 goes away then OSRS will end up with just as much mtx as RS3 has now.
No way will Jagex just say oh lets let that cash cow go.

I quit over a year ago, because of the lack of updates. Since I quit only 3 quests have come out. only 3! What in the world is this? And tbh it's not just quests that have been suffering greatly it's the same with almost any other type of content. Like the bank rework and mining and smithing update. To me it seems Jagex is pulling away a lot of resources from RS 3. There is nothing for me in this game.

This Runefest was the worst ever. Nothing great was announced at all. I don't like OSRS, but the people playing that at least get really nice updates. It's really absurd. I don't see myself coming back at all if this goes on.
