I really think people shouldn't be allowed to pass English (at least at GCSE level) unless they can demonstrate competent understanding on how and where to use different forms of words (their/there/they're, where/were, could have , must have , and so on).

Somehow being able to regurgitate some stuff about Macbeth constitutes more to an English grade than an actual ability to apply the language.

Effect is something that isn't ordinary (bad example, I guess). Like, Barrows items have effects. Armadyl, Bandos and Subjugation don't.

Affect is when you are changing the effect of something. Adding passives to Armadyl, Bandos and Subjugation would affect their effects.

Who/whom is also a bit tricky.

That's the only one that really trips me up, I only use whom when I'm talking about someone indirectly. I don't know if that's the proper usage but that's how I use it lol.

I guess that doesn't work for this though:
Whoever did this is incredible.
Whomever did this is incredible.

I think the latter would be used that instance?

It's down to the subject of the sentence.

'Who did this?' - 'who' is the subject of the sentence.

'To whom should we offer our support?' - 'whom' is the object of 'support'.

Though that's a hazy line, I still misuse it very often.

Where I'm from 1/4th of the written English exam focuses on the use of suchs words, especially: Baknoob said :

In high school, that is.
