Enquiry - inquiry is one I believe

Enquiry is if you enquire about something - an inquiry is the act of doing so.

e: Nvm, apparently it's not that simple, but that's what I have gone by lol.

Apparently inquire/y is normally used for a 'formal investigation' and enquire/y is just a general use case?

Dunno. Also, enquiry no longer looks like a word.

What messes me around is 'affect' and 'effect'.

Is the former a subject-related, consequential word? 'Person X was affected badly by object Y', and the latter an object, causation word? 'Object Y had a negative effect on person X'.

But the two seem markedly similar.

I also see "could of" fairly often, mostly by native english speakers. Is that due to the way they speak (could've?)? I've never thought about writing it like that as we were learned it's "could have" in school@
