If you want X, Y and Z items, why not try and better yourself so you can get those items? It depends what kind of things we're talking about. Generally I'm quite persistent when it comes to chasing my dreams, but there are some things I absolutely dread and if those are the way to my dream, I may reconsider the validity of the said dream.
I want to be able to enjoy the journey as well, so if I desire something that would involve something stressing, frustrating or just generally unenjoyable to me (For example intensive combat), I'll more than likely not find the result worth the effort I'd need to put in to achieve it.
