I can't say I've ever used a shield for tanking pets, and it's easy enough to switch to a vengeful for geyser resonances.
And Strykebows are a thing if you must use a shield
3 hours later:
It's not so much as needing a shield, it is just better dps while having access to shield abilities. When things go perfect I use like 2 brews & 2 rocks for the whole kill. I still time it perfectly to kill the pet when the dps pile hits 750k.
Also I have used it in emergency backups/base tanking, and again it works well because most of what you need is just access to defensive abilities. I probably eat more than I would with a spirit shield in those main tanking situations, but it works...
Also, Strykebow is one of the few toys I don't own. I have thought about getting one a few times, but I haven't quite convinced myself in getting one yet.
I don't get why food consumption (to that extent) matters, really. It doesn't really matter if you eat 2 or 20 rocktails, as long as you can still use your titan sufficiently for the whole kill its fine
Strykebow is nice, however I don't take it with me any more, I'm too much of a noob to try tank roles and I don't really want to start at Beastmaster/Yakamaru, rather start at something like Vorago (which I don't really go to any more) - Also if you buy a Strykebow and decide you don't want it, you can just remove the scalp (at the cost of the dark bows you used on it) and sell it back, so it's not even that expensive if you just want to play with it.
I tried ascensions, I just could not get used to them, I like my Nox and tbh, I'll keep it until I can afford to throw 70m on the range defender.
