RWH,
I'm too lazy to read past pages. After MalwareBytes does its thing, run a "combofix" scan.
You're probably infected with adware, which is why you're seeing ads everywhere. Malwarebytes is able to detect this (and all sorts of malware) and usually is enough, but I'd run Combofix in case something was left behind.
I also suggest you run CCleaner scans on your registry as well as a scan to delete your temporary internet files.
You can get it here:

Edit: Most antiviruses are a sham when it comes to protecting you from real-time malware. Like, if you click a link and you get infected, or if your browser downloads an infected cookie, it probably will go undetected by ANY antiviruses.
A free, reliable AV I recommend is "Microsoft Security Essentials". It's free, light and doesn't prompt you to purchase anything. You can get it here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download
