1) The thrill. Your heart was beating. Why? Because a little white dot appeared on your map. "Holy crap there's more than one... ahhh crap!"
2) Their loot. You get exactly what you see. They may keep a few items, but if they're skulled they only get one thing. You didn't get that chest piece they had? Well you still got their awesome shield! It's still loot.
3) It was a /challenge/ to PK. It wasn't a game of "Can I catch you before you hop back into a safe zone?" It was "Okay, I've got three more hits worth before he gets low enough in the Wilderness to teleport?" The difference? You're NOT standing right next to a safezone unless you're one of the Edgeville fighters. You don't find people far away from safe zones too often in PvP worlds. Lame.
4) No EP. You don't have to sit around to get something good. And you don't have to play "Survivor: Runescape Edition" just to have fun while also making money. PKers have been complaining of EP just go make PKing worth their while on top of the fun they have.
5) Broken Alliances, a clan saving you, etc. You meet a group in the wildy... they don't attack you. Rather, they offer you to join their pack, at least for this trip. Now a few things could happen... you could get betrayed and killed, you could have a hayday and join in the gathering of much loot, etc. But the best part? You had options, and you had to know the terrain in case of a coup. These things don't happen near as often nor are they near as rewarding as the old Wilderness.
The verdict: So what if you were scared? So what if you died? You enjoyed the experience in the end! It may have turned out sad, but the fact that your heart started pumping, the fact that you interacted with other players beyond "Sup let's fight." was what made the Wildy unique. The thrill of learning from trial and error can not be found in PvP worlds.
