I received an email asking why I cancelled my membership and what they could do to help fix the problem. Here was my response:

Hello Mod Xan/Jagex,


As a player that has been with Runescape since 2004, I can honestly say that I have grown up with the game. I'd get home from school, and look forward to hopping online. It was a simple game, but there was something very captivating about it.

Over the years, I feel the game has been updated into something that it was never meant to be. This might sound silly, but the HD graphics, the Grand Exchange, Bounty Hunter and now the Evolution of Combat, has morphed this perfect game into something that I, along with many other members of the community have found to no longer be as enjoyable. The HD graphics cause slower gameplay. The Grand Exchange, I don't have too much of a problem with, as it is highly convenient, but I do miss standing in World 2 along with everyone else, typing away, "Buying 1000 lobsters!". It was more of a challenge, and it took work to know what the street price of items were, not just trusting the GE to give you an estimate. Becoming wealthy took a lot of work, and players that achieved it were respected. It seems like nowadays everyone has millions.


The update that I was specifically referring to upon canceling my membership though, was of course the Evolution of Combat. This has been BY FAR my least favorite of the updates. It just wasn't necessary. I understand from a business standpoint, you feel the game needs to evolve in order to attract new players. However, if the new system is causing you to lose your already built and loyal fan base....What is the point? You are just recycling veteran plays in an effort to gain new ones.

I never played World of Warcraft. I've tried it before, and it was overly complicated for my tastes, especially the combat. That is why I've always enjoyed Runescape. It was unique. It was its own style of gameplay, not leaning upon any other games. It was simple, yet fun. I have read the online forums on multiple websites and the general opinion seems to be that people aren't liking it. I'm sure you have read the forums, like I have. Are you not seeing the complaints? Are you not seeing the negative attitudes? People have grown to love this game that you created, and I can't for the life of me understand why you would want to fix something that isn't broken. Why would you make the combat system complicated like that of World of Warcraft?


Again, from a business standpoint, I can understand where you are coming from. In order to please both new AND veteran players, why not make half of the worlds with the EoC, and half without? You will no doubt be gaining new players that enjoy the newer style of combat that you have worked so hard to produce, while also appeasing the veteran players, who like me, enjoy the more simple version of Runescape.


This will be the only way that Jagex will see my membership status returning to "Active". I don't want to say goodbye to a game I've enjoyed for 8 years, but if I no longer find enjoyment in it, I can't come up with a reason to stay and pay money.


I'm sure you will receive thousands of emails, and the odds are that you will never see this one. Never the less, you have spent 8 years bringing me happiness, so the least I could do was return the favor and offer constructive criticism and advice as to how to please your gaming community. If you do read this though, please take it into consideration.

I find it comical Jagex even bothers to send those emails. This soon after a release of a highly controversial update, with so many posts threatening to quit, do you really have to ask? Further proof the Mods are not reading these forums.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they'll never see it, but as I stated in the rather long email, I wanted to at least give them an opportunity to see exactly what we as players don't want, and how they can remedy the situation that suits both them and us.

Well Jagex you really slapped us in the face. I logged in today - haven't been on in a month. First thing I did was check my gear, Bandos ect and a newbie could buy them in a few weeks of harcore play - their cheaper than Dragon armor now. Talk about a slap to the face, I remember working hard to get bandos and armadyl armor and now it's just junk gear!!!!!

I'm done, was bad enough that you made changes that as far as I am concerned were really poor and do not enhance the game by any means - but the BOTs still rule Runescpae as well !!! Well done Jagex, slapped the veterns in the face and gave the bots free roam over the game.

Hope the bots make you millions of cash....

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but figured it was a good start. I just canceled my membership today, almost 5 years playing now and I am done. I am not getting into a spitting contest with mods or other players, but the reasons why I quit are simple.

1.) I personally think EOC is a really poor update and can't compare to any combat I have played in games like "Reckoning", "Gods Of War" ect. if anything EOC is really bad and lacks simple commands like dodge, evade - all it really does is allow the player to sustain more damage while trying to do slayer tasks!!!

2.) The graphics though they are pretty good, all they have done is cause more lagg and that is on my new iMac I just bought that is a power house compared to my new laptop which I just bought as well which is also pretty fast as well.

3.) All my gear is worthless now, Bandos, Armadyl ect. a newbie player can get better gear in a few weeks of playing Runescape.

4.) Bots rule the world of Runescape, all this hype for the new bot destroyer system and it has failed miserably! Bots are running rampid all over, and it seems the only ones who don't think so are a handful of players and mods - the rest of us players see them and they are a major pest problem.

These are all issues I have been posting now for months, none of which have been taken seriously. Runescape now would be ok for skillers and noncombat players, but if you're into combat your probably best to stick with PS3 or *BOX.

Perhaps one day I will become a member again, but not until these issues I have posted are corrected or improved upon. I refuse to pay $120.00 a year for membership to a game I am more frustrated with and find no enjoyment in, however that is just me.
