Torchlight emanated from the monastery to the south as the monks began preparing for bed. Brother Harald had taken to a night watch, finding himself sat outside of the monastery door with a torch attached the wall at his left and his manuscript of Saradomin's Will opened in his lap. He began reading quietly, smiling at the words etched on the page for they were so dear to him. His index finger of the right hand trickled along the lines on the page, following along as his voice muttered the words out. Harald was a simple man and yet- so full of grace and anticipation for serving Order. Monks had often appeared to be simple man to more simpler folk within the urban areas of the kingdom, however, they lived a life of dedication and scholarly sound in mind, eager to form a collective of piety. Such was Harald's life and his mission.

The sound of the torch crackling was soothing and he enjoyed the silent night where the sounds of crickets and the sight of fireflies warmed his heart whilst he read his book. It was perhaps the first time he was ever able to truly enjoy the night sky, having been plagued for so long by the sounds of war to the west and savagery to the south. Such was the unfortunate location of this monastery. However, it occurred to Harald that the silence was almost dreadful. In fact, his suspicion and paranoia drifted from the pages of the manuscript he read and towards the woodlands where darkness had no escape... No sounds of war in the west... no sounds of savagery in the south...

Setting the book aside next to his stool, Harald then plucked the torch from its holder, raising it slightly above his head as he looked across his own view of the monastery's front yard. An endless darkness amidst the trees felt overbearing as he stepped forward, passing the fireflies and ignoring the now festive sounds of the crickets.

He branched off from the path, thinking to himself, "I am a monk and a fool. Saradomin's light keeps me steadfast."

The notion of anything eerie or mysterious soon passed over his head as if he immediately reassured himself that so long as his God protected him and by his own faith he trusted in Saradomin, that no darkness shall be the whip of his fears. He turned around, beginning to return to the path he had now strayed from.

Whatever confidence Harald possessed in that moment was critically cut short by a dread of loneliness. In a moment, the musings of the crickets and the beacons of hope and security in the fireflies ceased to exist. Harald's torch became the only savior to him whilst even the fireflies no longer comforted his descent into the dark woodlands. The crickets all the same, abandoning Harald when he needed the company the most. Sounds of the trees swaying sent a shiver to his neck and Harald found himself circling in one spot. Paranoia struck. He knew he was not alone.

Sticks crunched from beyond the trees, a warm wind was like hearing a hundred men exhale at once. Harald faced away from the monastery looking west, his eyes narrowing as he aimed his torch.

"Who goes there?"... Silence... "Anyone?"... silence... "I-I-I'm going-"... CRACK. SNAP.

Footsteps approached Brother Harald at a bold and daunting pace. Monks had always known when dark energies masked themselves in the form of fears, however, Harald's feeling of dread this night was more potent than ever. From the shadows of the oak tree, a figure emerged, briefly cloaked by the dark before Harald's torchlight glistened on the centerpiece of this figure. Harald's eyes narrowed and widened all the same.

A blonde man with his hair tied in a top not and very rugged beard horribly twisted in braids had come forward, the torchlight causing his torso to glisten and Harald could make out the very intricate design of a skull upon the iron chest of the man.

"Wh-wh-whooo are you?" He mumbled.

The man smiled in a crooked manner, his shoulder raising shortly after Harald fumbled his words. With his head turned to the side towards the monk, the figure chuckled amusingly and spoke in a deep tone, yet soft as a whisper, "I am the means to an end, brother." Then, in the very flash of Harald's eyes were his memories of the monastery forty years ago when he had arrived and the lifetime of lessons spoken to him by Abbot. In those moments, he felt free, and indeed he was.

The Khazard skull upon the chest of the assailant was the last thing Harald would see before his life flashed before his eyes and his torch snuffed out. With the extinguishing of his torch, the silence of the crickets, and the absence of fireflies, Harald was in darkness forever. His life snuffed out like the torch he bare and his last moments breathing upon the spring ground were spent hearing the fall of his brothers.

A shift in the dimension, as if the flesh of Gielnor itself is being threatened to tear itself open. As if a parasite is ready to burst forth from its host and let itself be known to the world. It seems the time for that moment draws near, it has been rumored that the good folk of Kandarin have been noticing strange anomalies lately that derive from magical origins. They wouldn't be rifts or portals but merely 'soft' spots in the dimension of Gielnor, noticeable by the shimmering of the air around the spot. The most noticeable anomaly would be at the forest west of The Tower of Life... We might've just created something very powerful, something that can change the world.
The Last of the Aren's.
