Mentoring

This is perhaps my biggest issue with the current guide and probably will come off as bias in a sense, though I'll avoid it.

It seems through all the labor taken to creating an inclusive guide for the roleplay community, there is only one individual deemed worthy to mentor new roleplayers into immersing themselves into our community. Despite there having been numerous applicants and accepted volunteers. I find it even less productive that the thread owner is the only suitable mentor available.

Through my own experience, I applied on the thread to volunteer as a mentor and have maintained consistent activity in mentoring individuals. Having put myself up for the role in August of 2017, it's unquestionable that I've maintained that role unless my membership was briefly interrupted, never more than a week or two, though I was removed from the list. The observance of a roleplayers activity is wholly inadequate as it seems to pertain as to when the owner specifically see them online rather than trusting their effort to mentor others.

The time frame is a feature that should be immediately removed as it assumes competent mentorship takes a dedicated daily gamer and the owner's opinion of one's online status without monitoring their affairs. It's simple to keep a list of volunteer mentors and decide not to tamper with it, really. It gives more options to newcomers and doesn't present itself to the naked eye that the writers mentoring isn't bias or perhaps turning away new members of the community.

Why would I assume that the guide owner might be turning away newcomers? I don't, but it's a valid concern. In fact, I'm actually very delighted with the tone of the guide and the owner's ability to look past some personal opinions in favor of introducing concepts he may disagree with like PoK's.

Feedback and Criticism

Many of the guide owners replies to criticism on the thread neither negate the comments or solve them. I find it unwelcoming and unbecoming of the guide owner and sole mentor to newcomers to be assuming critics have deeper nefarious purposes than to criticize the content of the thread, but to harass and bully. A proper response to such delinquents is probably to ignore them, as exhibited towards myself in the past and countless others.

Or, perhaps examining their true criticism and cutting away the negativity in order to actually answer their concerns rather than feel threatened? Such is the duty of good leaders.

Lastly, I find it incredibly bad manners for leaders within our community (guide owners, clan owners, and self-proclaimed mentors) to insinuate to newcomers that we exist in a community of constant rivalry, grudges, and bickering, when in fact, that should be an experience they sum up on their own. We can't assume all newcomers are here to play nice, either, and it's unfair to them to imply our community isn't worth sticking around in because they'll just get their feelings hurt.

Harassment will exist no matter where you go. Unless you're actively fighting against it, it's unproductive to try to change that. Such philosophy exists beyond gaming communities and seeps into the real world. Sometimes the bad guys win. Come back ten times stronger.

As I state on the thread, I remove people who go inactive for an extended period of time. If you've noticed yourself taken down, why haven't you posted asking to be put back up? If I were to leave up all the names that ask to be there, then Rexost would still be there, and he hasn't logged on to RS in over a year.

For anyone concerned with the fair treatment of fellow roleplayers, it seems very odd that one would instill a timeframe at all when it seems more beneficial to at least broaden the options of mentors for new members, offering various people for them to decide. Instead, the option to choose a mentor at all is completely stripped from new members.

It would be immensely more productive to simply keep a list of all volunteers and once one catches a mentor online, ask them whether or not they intend to keep their mentoring role.

Rather than taking an anti-social or lazy approach to a brilliant idea.

I would highly suggest we keep this courteous and on-topic. If you actually read anything the hidden posts prior said, you'd know pieces of my personal life were revealed. A bit ironic considering we're derailing the topic with considering how roleplayers are personally affected by words.
