I think the current names are more relateable, naming their own territories would only mean complicating it all, resulting in an giant heap of PoK's with bluury borders, ending up confusing both new and old players.
So in summary, I think it isn't worth making it realistic due to the complications.

My opinion on the matter would be that you don't necessarily have the right to dictate what should or should not be if you aren't actively involved in the running of said territories.
The naming is up to those in charge; should they wish to change it for the purpose of "realism", they can do so. As it happens, that's not what they've typically chosen to do. You might disagree with how things are, and that's perfectly fine, but at the end of the day, it's not up to you.
There's currently a good level of attention given to the two sticky threads the roleplay community currently holds. You yourself contributed enough to it to have f-mods actually force some sort of change to happen, put the current holder into place and extend their helping hands to sort out the whole sticky thread situation.
