Hello roleplayers,

This thread is a small preview and overview of the things being planned for
a freelance based group that uses dice rolls and character stats
during roleplay on RuneScape. Apologies for the longevity of it all but it’s not your average roleplay idea being presented here. Furthermore a huge thank-you goes to Magus and Khaji for providing the framework from their old RP group on another platform.

This thread will be updated through the following weeks as more details of the project are being fleshed out and discussed between those involved. This thread is to enable a broader audience to spectate the process and give suggestions of their own.

Through the use of a simple D6 (a dice with 6 sides) and the information you put onto your character sheet we’ll provide for you we hope to create a creatively challenging way to both enjoy roleplaying and the feeling of being on equal ground as the other players in the group. That’s what this is. The creation of a group that wants a more standardised format to roleplay in, but still wants to have the creative freedom the lore of RuneScape has to offer. The themes of this group will be down to earth adventuring and casual slice of life roleplay, for now.

Put bluntly, we made up a system to roleplay in
.
We hope what we'll offer really captures what RuneScape is all about. To standardise things for our group we're going to work with these to make your character feel like an actual character and not just a toolbox to solve actions with:
- Dice rolls
- Attributes
- Skills
- Perks
- Titles
- Weapon/Armor Tiers
- The gods of RuneScape

I hope to be able to update the thread the more comfortable we are with what we’ve come up with for them. In the meantime, stay tuned and hopefully you’ll find our idea appealing enough to give it a shot. Once again, this is a presentation of the standard format used to roleplay on RuneScape for an individual group.

Dice rolls

To add another level of gameplay to roleplay, we want to use the D6 for solving the results of actions. Each character will be allocated attribute and skill points
(more on those later on)
to give the D6 their value and to yield a result to each throw.

The design philosophy behind the D6:
- During events the GM sets a certain difficulty for each time you roll your D6. The greater the result, the bigger the success of your action will be. The success of the action is RNG based whereas the typed out result written in-game is still up to the players.
- In combat, that means the D6 is used for roll offs between the enemy and the player and for the player versus another play
- The amount of dice you can roll is up to the players and their character design choices. That’s why we work with something called a
Dice Pool
. Your Luck Attribute and your Skill Level can manipulate the Dice Pool.
• Luck
gives you a bonus D6 to be used for all rolls each 2 points spend.
• Skill levels
give you bonus D6 for each point to be used for the corresponding skill.

You can add these bonus D6 to your roll attempt once per event and will act as a characters' Stamina in a way.
The more D6 you roll for your Fire Magic, the better the result, the more damage you’ll do, but burning through all your bonus D6 can leave you vulnerable later on.

We hope to create a fun and balanced experience for everyone involved through the use of a D6 based system and will expand on this in the future if things end up balanced poorly. For now this will serve as the base framework and we will expand on it later through the development of this group.

Attributes

Attributes give your character a means to act and react to the scene at hand. Each attribute gives your character’s dice rolls value and makes rolls different for each character. There are currently 5 attributes to level, with HP starting on 5 when at level 0. Upon creation you will get 10 to spend amongst them. Each level you will get 1 extra point to spend. The reason we are going with Attributes is to keep the balance between all players and to give people the sense that nobody has any sort of unfair advantage over others. Roleplaying will be rewarded and you'll be able to have your character grow in their strengths as you progress.

The design philosophy behind attributes:

• Constitution
– Your constitution will be translated to Hitpoints. Every point spend in it will give you 5 HP.
Lots of points will yield a character able to withstand a lot of punishment in case the hits keep on coming.

• Power
– This is the damage of your attacks (or the strength of your healing)
. More points mean bigger damage and easier rolls to hit through your opponents’ defence.

• Defence
– Gives you damage reduction when taking hits in combat.
More defence means you will be able to take lower hits and contribute more to damage migration for the party.

• Initiative
– Gives you a bonus on turn-order rolls.
Every turn the roleplayers will roll for a turn-order and the more initiative you have the faster your character is going to be.

• Luck
– Gives you a bonus dice for your dicepool every 2 points.
These bonus dice can be burned in order to get a higher result than your skills/attributes would allow you to. A bonus dice can only be used once per event.

- After rolling, the damage done is the difference between the user’s Power and the opponents defence.

Skills

Skills can be made up by the player themselves and make up what a character is proficient at .
Our skills is what makes a character have something to act and react to the narrative in-game.
Adding a level and points to them is a means to slot them into the D6 system while keeping them balanced and still incredibly customisable, personal and fun to work with.

A skill comes in 3 levels of proficiency depending on the total skill points spend. Untrained (0), Trained (1-9) and Mastered (10+) . You can always roll for an untrained skill but it will only be 1D6. Trained skills give you 2D6 to roll and mastered skills give you 3D6 to roll.

The design philosophy behind skills:

Each character has to make choices as to how good they want to be at a certain skill. You can be very good at Fire Magic , but that means there will be less points to be spend at say Swordsmanship or Marksmanship . We hope to prevent people from making swiss army knife characters who can do everything and to disable super strong actions to be performed straight from character creation.

Each skill level gives you an extra D6 to burn during an event. This is to show that a character is getting more proficient at their skills and enable easier rolls when using the skill. Someone with level 5 Fire Magic is obviously a better user of it than a level 1 Fire Magic character. The level 5 user gets to burn 5D6 during the event whilst the level 1 user only gets 1 extra D6.

You can take as many skills as you want but that means you will have a bigger spread of your points and you might as well have that skill be untrained instead of spending points in it. It also means that you will do your rolls with less skills so you will burn through your bonus dice faster. We hope to give players a challenge as to how they want to design their character in order to fit their wanted playstyle.

Skills Continued

• The catch is that the system of bonus D6 also work as someone’s ‘
stamina
’ so to say.
Someone who has mastered the skill simply has the option to throw more dice, but should know that burning all 10 in one move will severely cost you. Though these bonus dice can be recovered through other means, it hopefully encourages strategic and realistic use of skills and will prevent spamming/abuse of them.

How the skills serve a narrative purpose is totally up to the players.
As long as it’s something in the lore of RuneScape, roleplay however you want.
Running out of bonus D6 could for example be a low running rune pouch, a worn down knight or an archer left with only low quality arrows. The idea is to be creative and let the D6 take away the former points of argument we had on W42. You’ll have to declare what you’re going for before you roll your D6 and then it’s all a matter of luck that’s being manipulated to an extend by the choices of the players.
