I'm super happy you're taking the initiative to put the system you've been working on with others out there. I'd love to join in and help in any way I can, what would the best way of doing that be?

I tend to spend more time on OSRS but I'm happy to go onto RS3 if that's where it's happening.

Alternatively, hit me up on Discord.

Here are my initial thoughts. From what I understand this system has been used before, so I'm sure you or Magus or Khaji have a much better idea of how the system will work than I do. Still, here are my thoughts.

A single attribute for Power is interesting. If my powerful wizard was forced to engage in some kind of melee combat, would they be equally as powerful? The system doesn't have to be non-exploitable, but it seems odd that I wouldn't be able to represent my character being incompetent with weapons but strong with magic.

Constitution and Defence occupy a similar design space, given the level of abstraction we have here. They work differently of course and there are flavor reasons to pick one over the other, but with only 5 attributes I'm just not sure you need both of these.

And finally my smallest concern is with turn order being rolled for every turn. This potentially rewards(?) you for rolling poorly if you also rolled well by allowing you to act twice in a row (acting after your opponent on one turn and before them the next). I'm not actually sure if this would be a big deal, just something I thought about.

Regardless, I'm happy to see this thread. Good luck!

This is where skills come into play, something not yet expanded upon much on the thread yet. The idea is that you allocate your character with offensive, defensive and supportive skills. Say the player goes with both Swordsmanship and Elemental Magic in your example as 2 of their skills of choice. The then use their skill points to level these skills to represent your characters’ proficiency in the skill. You can say you put 9 points to Elemental magic, representing they are close to mastering the skill while putting only 1 in swordsmanship, representing they once picked up a sword at some point.

Don’t quote me on this one but while I agree the design space is similar, the two attributes (hopefully) serve different purposes. Flavor being one of them, we as GM’s also have some hope to create certain endgame like scenarios where the damage of boss will need something more than just high hit points. The old system worked with only 3 attributes so with the introduction of defence we hope to ‘balance’ the near always looming instant kill ability strong enemies had by giving players the option for hit reduction. When things get more depth we hope that the flavor of perks will entice players to invest in either of the two to suit their desired role, playstyle or thematic flavor of choice.
