I like this (being Shrap's post). Being cool to each other and having fun is fun.
I will say that a good confuse or bind spell will help massively in a 1v1, while a fire surge is probably just dumb. If you want to be a good combative mage, you have to think like any other fighter- sheer power won't help you if you're a tactical idiot. The majority of magic duels I've seen against a non-magical opponent have rarely involved a spell above bolt level (tier 2?).
Think about what's fun- describe it! Write about the sparks from the fire. Do something more than *charges fire blast for 3 turns and sends*- make it cool. We're all wizards. Get some style, some pizazz, some groove, etc etc.
I haven't really followed the whole tier-casting-thing as strictly, but I tend to just do a rough description and try and play fair- as a general rule you can handwave some of the guidelines (think of it like the pirate code) as long as it's not done for the sake of winning/being "That Guy".
This thread could probably be relabeled as "How To Do Magic And Not Be That Guy"
The only thing I've never really gotten into is the whole runeless vs runic magic thing because it's rarely made a difference for me anyways tbh- you can just say you have the runes on you. Even if you're a master earth mage, for example, runes are probably a good idea so that you don't get tired. Pragmatism, you know?
