The Mark
¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤••¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•

The Mark of the Sicarius is an ancient ritual magic woven of blood and soul, created by Xuksesra in the third age and until recently was powered by the vestigial anima of her entrapped soul. The ritual involves a sharp object, usually a dagger, wielded by one already carrying the Mark's magic inside of them, penetrating the flesh of the subject in order to let blood and expose their inner essence. From that wound the magic is imbued into their veins, which carry its anima particulates like bacteria throughout the rest of the body; Their soul and very bone marrow becomes infused with the dark curse and the flesh around the wound blackens. Traditionally the ritual involves the carving of an 'S' into the subject, so that the blackening of tissue will result in a tattoo. The tattoo may be modified, expanded upon to provide an aesthetic so as to not be uncomfortable to look at.

Upon infusion of the Mark's curse, the bearer becomes telepathically linked with all other living bearers of the Mark and obtains immutable thoughtspeak with their new family. In addition, its presence in the soul serves to offer protection from enthralled guardians and is the 'battery' from which Bloodforged equipment draws its strength, enabling its superior enchantments that make Sicariian craft so much more preferable to common tools.

However, bearing the Mark does not merely provide benefits. Those that wear it seem destined for tragedy and heartbreak, as well as remarkable woes in the afterlife. In life the Marked are sworn to service under the Dominus, who has peerless control of the ritual magic and may use it to inflict torturous pain upon any unlucky enough to draw their ire and may even invoke true death upon the bearer's soul. This act of killing is what caused the great purge of the Sixth Age, by Jeoffrey Sicarius.

The Tenets
¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤••¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•

In order for the Mark to function in service to its bearer, they must follow the Tenets, an unbreakable set of rules that define the family's direction. Initially there were three set by Xuksesra, however after she was freed and allowed to pass on, the Dominus has the privilege of rewriting, adding, and removing them as they see fit. The Tenets are not capable of being misguided, but they are introspective and differ in application from bearer to bearer. As of now there are two, because this post is out of space.

The First Tenet

Everything for the Family - As it is presented, all of your official actions must be for the benefit of the Family. The definition of 'family' is not strictly literal, and may refer to either the bearers of the Sicarius name or the name itself. For example, if you steal from the house treasury then you will be acting against the good of the Sicarius family, but if it's to bribe law enforcement to cease pursuing one of its members then you are acting for the good of the Sicarius family and the tenet will be unbroken.

The Second Tenet

Fight your best - The most perspective-reliant tenet, this may refer strictly to combat prowess or it may refer to personal growth in all forms. One who is lazy and inactive but employs unrelenting effort in combat will not be in violation of this tenet. One who cannot fight but gives their all in supporting and caring for others will not be in violation of this tenet. One who can do nothing but wake up in the morning will not be in violation of this tenet, so long as they do not surrender to their debilitations; Self-improvement and drive seems to be the core of this tenet.

The Bloodforge
¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤••¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•

Observed within Althran, the Bloodforge is a fully kitted smithy featuring lava trenches, molds and casts, a melting pot and refineries. It also is outfitted with several anima infusers and focusing fonts with designs taken from the Elemental Workshop, for which to imbue equipment with magic; Such is the secret and the treasure of the Bloodforge, in creating equipment that resonates with the family.

In order to function with its full potential, the Bloodforge requires the presence of the Dominus or an artefact which channels the Mark's ritual magic through it. Possible enchantments are wildly dynamic and customizable and have ranged from simple durability effects to elemental imbuements or, in the case of the Domini equipment, fear incitement and negation of fatigue toxins. The drawback of this method of enchanting results in it feeding off the soul of the user, usually obtaining its necessary power from the Mark's presence and thus sparing from drawing the life away, however this leaves open the potential for one to use soulmancy on themselves to access the enchantments; It's not yet been done and is ill-advised, however, for the boons are never worth sacrificing one's years to obtain.

The Bloodforge is the only location which contains the molds and designs for unique Sicariian equipment, and is the sole forge capable of making the famous Sicariian athame. Expansive gear lists notwithstanding, iconic or fabled equipment produced by the Bloodforge may be found below.

Ret'braces

Core to every Sicarius' kit and an essential all-purpose everyday carry is the simple yet effective design of the ret'braces, shortened from retracting bracers. A standard pair of ret'braces are leather bracers or a pair of long gloves of which the inside of the arm is customized with a steel pocket that spans the forearm, which contains a fixture controlled by a small, concealed bolt-latch to prevent whatever tools from falling back in. Capable of carrying virtually any equipment so long as it can initially fit inside the thin pocket, popular choices range from stiletto blades to meathooks and even lockpicks. Deployment is as simple and effortless as brushing one's hand across the bracer to slide the bolt into place, the telegraph easily disguised through meaningless gestures like clapping, or adjusting one's gloves. Alternative designs include overhand models, and legends whisper of a pair that function as wrist-bows.

Athame

Trained and blooded members of the Sicarius are always gifted with a personalized dagger crafted at the Bloodforge, imbued with the Mark and capable of being a catalyst of their power. Effective as a mage's casting implement, a warrior's sidearm or as a ritual knife, it's more than just a tool but a symbolization of who they are. It serves as identification after undergoing makeover magic, and it functions as a key to inner Sicariian sanctums. To lose it is to lose oneself, and should one lose their athame they may be subject to humiliation and ostracization until they are able to reclaim it.

Location: Althran
¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤••¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•

Deep into Forinthry, behind legions of dragons and demons lies the old Sicariian fortress of a name long lost. Occupied and maintained by Worshippers of the Dragonkin who have allied to and submitted to the reign of the Dominus, it is indisputably the most well-guarded keep that the Sicarius have at their disposal and is to be considered their true home. With towering walls scaling as high as 35 feet (battlements not included in measurement) and machicolations every ten feet apart, its mere initial keep is secured against most forms of challengers, built to withstand dragons. Within its walls is a bustling civilization training warriors and housing an anima font sourced from far below the Wilderness' scarred surface to allow for paltry farming opportunities, self-sufficiency being the core design.

Althran is capable of housing up to 150 people, and is currently home to roughly 100 Worshippers of a wide age range. There they have access to nearly all aspects of Althran except for the castle inside, of which only the main hall, war table and passages to the rooftops are open to them. Every other level of the castle is behind barriers which resist souls lacking the Mark, and behind locks that require Sicariian blade-keys to enter.

In an absence of high-ranking Sicarius, it is overseen and controlled by Lycaea of the Prometheans.

Special Thanks
¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤••¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•¤†¤•

From when this thread was for the Asgarnia player-owned Kingdom (2018-2022)
Thank you to Ashtorette, Merca and Klitty for helping me out with the coup, and your patience in me getting here. (9/22/2018)

Additional thank-you to Ashtorette for her dedicated work with the Port Sarim area, designing flags, creating the Sicarius decal on the current (5/24/2020) intro post and the full decal located on page 38.

An extra-warm thank-you to every vitriolic post on this thread who managed to be so colossally wrong that a whole quest was released explaining why.

From when this thread became the Sicarius noble RP group (2022-Onwards)

Thank you to Xuksesra's player who may not want to have their RSN displayed here, for working with me so many years ago and creating the storyline that lead to this. For passing the lore and control of the Sicarius group down to me after deciding you wanted to be rid of it, and though we may not have gotten to finish, we still talked everything out to the point that it was fleshed out in full.

Thank you to Lady Airlea, who helped me finish writing the one blank point in Jeoffrey's backstory - his origin and family. You didn't have to loan me the Renderra name and certainly didn't have to tie him to such a namesake character of yours, but you did and it created such a beautiful dynamic both internally and externally for Jeoffrey that I can't imagine it ever working out better.
