Respectfully, I disagree. This is not the "correct approach" and I wouldn't condone anyone doing it, 'infamous member of the community' or not.
1) You raise a fair point here, but a good role-player knows not to metagame and will act accordingly like their character won't know. That said, there's no reason why a POK leader/King should trust just ANYONE in-character and you should always expect some scepticism and paranoia. Some random guy from an ancient house trying to reclaim his power? Yeah, sure, he definitely doesn't have any motivation behind that. /s
2) I would find it more respectable that the role-player comes to me and says "hey, I just wanted to tell you that this character is a spy". As you'll see with any example, communication is crucial. If a POK leader is that attached to their POK that they consistently/always worry about losing it I doubt that they have the maturity to lead one. You cannot expect to have it forever - other people have stories to tell. Appreciate the time you had and make another.
3) Also a true point - some of the best role-plays I have experienced have invoked some real emotion in me. They really stuck with me. But this isn't really comparable - your surprise is in an OOC level regarding the identity; ergo the emotions are more toward you (the role-player) than the character, and as I've said prior, it's not unreasonable to disapprove of that.
