Is this really necessary? If you review the evidence, you will find that artists, in many cases, do not actually write very much. Perhaps they will add captions under their depictions, or include text in drawing (such as wanted posters), but although they do know how to write, it is rarely required of them. Reading, however, might be a different matter entirely. With reading, they can understand more directly commissions for images where the commissioner is not directly available.
My existence is debatable, but likely.
