It's a common misconception that chameleons change their skin colour to blend into the environment they're in. This is actually false.

Male chameleons change their colour when they get excited in the presence of a female or a rival male; to vibrant shades of red/orange/yellow. Chameleons have cells containing red and yellow pigments, as well as the dark pigment melanin. It was concluded that the colour change happened due to the pigments spreading out and covering a wider area when excited, and withdraw to a small space when calm. But this was also proven to be incorrect.

Researchers found that underneath the skin pigment cells, chameleons have lattices of structurally arranged nano crystals. Now in Physics, the "light" as we know it is composed of a culmination of different wavelengths of various types of light. Blue light having a smaller wavelength and red light having the largest on the spectrum for example.

The latticed nano crystals are arranged in such a way that they reflect blue light. The yellow light from the skin pigment and the reflected blue light is was gives the chameleon it's green colour.

Chameleons have shown to possess the ability to change the structure of those crystals. The more further apart the crystals are from each other, the longer the wavelengths of light they can reflect. So when excited, the chameleon creates more space between each crystal, allowing them to reflect red light. This, in conjunction with the yellow pigment gives it the vibrant colours.

Researchers also found a secondary layer of crystal lattices below these. But this layer contains crystal larger than ones in the first layer and more unevenly structured. It was found that these lattices can reflect waves on the infrared spectrum. They believe it's part of a mechanism the chameleon uses to reflect the heat off its body; allowing it to live in the most hottest and arid climates.

I'm going to be taking my first engineering course in the summer. I believe it's titled the Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering (I'm a mechanical engineering major, but this is a required course that I do need for graduation). I have the book with me right now and there was something interesting I came across in the book.

I believe I said that the action of turning on a light is instantaneous, and something else I'll add here is that a system receives or sends a signal that is traveling at or near the speed of light.

A system that receives a signal is assumed to be small enough to have the signal affect every point of the system simultaneously. How small does something have to be for the assumption to work? "...if the dimension of the system is 1/10th (or smaller) of the dimension of the wavelength, you have a lumped parameter system."

The textbook said that power systems in the US operates at 60 Hz, and we know that the speed of light is 3 x 10^8 m/s. The wavelength is the speed of light divided by the frequency, and we find that the wavelength is 5 x 10^6 m. So as long as the dimensions of the system are smaller than 5 x 10^5 m then the assumption will work.

With a frequency that is 10^9 Hz, the book recommends using the electromagnetic field theory to analyze the system.

A horse and a donkey may mate, but their offspring will be sterile. Due to the fact that they're different species, but closely related.

Guevedoce is a term for people who are men with a mutation that are considered girls until the age 12. This occurred in Dominican Republic.

The gender of alligators are determined by the temperature.
Life questioned Death, "Why do people love me and not you?" In Death's response, "...because you're a beautiful lie..., and I'm the ugly truth."

Interesting reads here ! :D Very cool stuff about the chameleon's too !!

Wish I was good with math.. but just not. Admire folks who are. :D

@JOKKU23

When I saw *² + 2x - 8 = 0

what I did instead of using the quadratic formula immediately was look at the 2x and try to find factors for -8 that add up to 2. What came to my head immediately was 4 and 2, and in this case, 2 is negative, so when we add 4 with negative 2 we get positive two which is the b component of the quadratic equation ax^2 + bx - c.

Here's my attempt at what I did

x² + 2x - 8 = 0

We need to find factors that make -8 and add up to 2, and sometimes through quick trial and error, we find 4 and -2.

-8 = -2 x 4 and -2 +4 = 2

(x+4)(x-2)= 0

foil this to make sure it's product is the equation

*^2 - 2x + 4x -8 = 0

simplify

x^2 + 2x - 8 = 0

the roots are at x = -2 and 4.

I'll use the quadratic formula as a last resort, or if I come into something like 4x^2 + 56x + 920 = 0.

Ah you just have to have patience and the willingness to read the book and do the practice problems. I'm not afraid to admit that when I first took a test to see which math class I had to start at. I ended up testing into Algebra 1. I worked hard and took one step at a time, and eventually just like that I've finished Algebra, Pre - Calculus, and Calculus 1 -3. Though I still need to take Differential equations, Linear Algebra, Vector Calculus, and the Statistics class required for engineers. It shouldn't be too difficult if I put in the time and effort.

Water can be called H2O, I'm sure this has something to do with Latin. It's not latin.
If you traveled the distance of the equator, it would be the same distance as travelling around the world. No; as you travel around at the north pole it's substantually shorter than if you travelled around the equator.
Light years are the amount of distance light can travel in a year. light years is light travelled in multiple years, whereas lightyear is singular.
Humans are animals. So are coral.
There are more humans alive today than all of the alive dead humans of the past. once again, no there have been about 108 billion people alive before our time; while we're catching up there's a lot to catch up with.
Birds use their wings to fly. No, they use force from the flapping of their wings to fly.
Humans sadly, can not fly. (Source: my first experience with gravity) Humans can fly, they're working on a jet pack and one's actually functional.
Because of science, we can't have super powers. I propose we get rid of science.

I hope you learned something new today.

okay sorry to bring up a page one, but i sincerely hope no one believed most of these.
