Currently, you can buy one but you can't ride it on a UK public road, cycle lane or pavement. Anyone who does is committing an offence.

The only place an e-scooter can be used is on private land, with the permission of the landowner.

They should be banned and scrapped period. Nearly hit 1 the other day in my car and I'd be the 1 to blame for him being a real idiot swerving all over the road.

Who ever thought these monstrosities should be able to use the roads and paths needs sacking. Jail too as someone will be killed soon. Idiotic things....... :@

^ +1

I live in a small village but the curse of the e-scooter has arrived. I saw a young lad whizzing along on the road a couple of months ago. It was a side road but it connects quite a lot of houses to a bigger road that leads out of the village.

I think they deffo look call. Kinda amused to see Tuffty's opinion on them though lol. "Menaces to society!" haha.

I like em and yeah there is a point in the fact that they can get onto the roads and cause havoc by not following the rules.

That's very similar with cyclists though. When I used to go to work, I'd see them always jumping red lights when they are technically supposed to follow them as well. It's like "WHAT ARE U DOING???".

e-scooters cost like £300 I think. Think I'd rather get an Apple Watch first before an e-scooter though. I'll just borrow someone else's to try out the e-scooter for fun sometime haha

I think the rented e-scooters are permitted on the roads in the UK towns/cities where they operate. I seem to remember that one town rescinded the permission for them due to a lot of accidents. They were also causing obstructions due to being abandoned in the middle of pavements. They are trip hazards for partially sighted/blind people and force people to have to walk into the road to get past.

They may be fun but they should not be used in public spaces!

About 20 years ago I was knocked over by a cyclist who was riding on the pavement, luckily I fell onto a grass verge. It took 6 weeks for the friction burn on my knee to heal. It was made by his front tire. I do not want to get run over by an e-scooter!

From a legal point of view, they're illegal on the road as they're a mechanically propelled vehicle (GOPEDS), and require a license, insurance, and road approval, nor are they allowed on the pavement under S34 RTA 1988.

As a concept, make them into a motor vehicle (different from an MPV), the same way we use mopeds, IE license, insurance.

A local council near-ish me is trialling them, however I'm unsure how successful it'll be. I'm yet to see one actually being ridden sensibly. Why don't I ride my 160BHP motorbike like I stole it? Ah yes, Because I'm not a tool and don't wish to die like every scooter person I've seen.

Concept isn't bad, green travel and all that, probably one of the only one's I'd use, however license/insurance/getting them approved for road use is another issue.

**Private roads** Oh how many people think car parks are 'private' land... Anywhere the public has access, paid or otherwise, is not private ;) As tuffty said, private land is literally that owned by someone else who has given you permission, which is generally a driveway, field, farm ect.

Edit: Before everyone goes 'ooooh but pedal cycles...' Yes. Cycles, around long before cars, they're exempt under Electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC), limited to 16.5MPH and must have pedals that function, its assisted, not powered.

Invalid carriages, IE mobility scooters. Simplified come in 3 categories, and obviously are for those who need them, not because they're fun, easy to use or because they're lazy >.>

Did you know the maximum sentence for injuring someone on a bicycle is 2 years imprisonment, which includes death :) (not including manslaughter, although on a bicycle that's difficult) Wanton and furious cycling, a fantastic offence that's very underused and unknown. A pathetic sentence for something that can, and has a fair few times killed, and injured lots. Did anything happen to said cyclist? did you report it to the police?

I honestly am on the fence on them.

I guess I love their practicality and their use, thus making life easier. However, I also find it a problem that there is no real regulation on them. These things are not normal bicycles.. they can travel up to 25mph. They are either going the wrong way, or are on the sidewalk. There needs to be rules on these things.

I also personally don't like them because I like fitness and this would in retrospect make me lazy. I dont mind going on a nice walk or actually ride a bike.. where I am actually working on something, but these scooters I feel do much more harm than good.

Just my 2 cents.

No, I didn't report him to the police, he was a teen doing his paper round, but I did report him to his mother....I'm sure he got a good telling off. She asked me if I needed help doing anything but I declined. I was bruised and shaken up but after a couple of days taking things easy I was mostly OK.
