Right so I literally just got home maybe 20 minutes ago and an hour or so before then was one of the highlights of my day, went to a restaurant and let me tell YOU that waitress my table had.... Well golly. She was something else. I'm pretty sure I fell in love and here's why. She was probably just doing her job but she seemed particularly interested in serving me more than others, and I didn't really do anything out of the way for that to be necessary.

There's just one problem, I have /no/ game. The way I discovered that is I went to pay and I didn't really include a tip so on top of the $3.50 I reached to get more money (not to show off) and said "Oh! Here's a tip! :D " shortly after she asked if I wanted a box to go and I said "yes please" so she gave me the box and walking away she said "By the way the box is upside down" which leads me to the title of saying "LOL well then" because the whole thing was awkward as mess because my personality IS awkward which is really quite unfortunate. Right at the end when she asked if we wanted receipts she even looked me in the eye from across a few tables when she was addressing the whole room. What do yall make of that?

No I wasn't rude nor did I say anything out of the way, I was respectful the entire time.

So! I need opinions/advice for future reference.

Don't overthink it.

People in the hospitality industries, including servers, are not only expected to be friendly and charming, but know that their income will rise (due to better tips) if they are.

To avoid disappointment, don't take her actions personally.

Whoa, hang on there. As one who has been in the industry and a female, once is not enough to come up with a conclusion of what you MAY think she meant. Unless she told you to shove off...then of course your answer is clear. :P

I would go back to this restaurant to see her once again. See if she engages with you on the same level as you think she may have the first time. But please don't go when it's busy, she wont have time for anyone except her customers.

It cant hurt to engage with her one more time, what do you have to lose? Since there is no investment of emotions just yet...

Good Luck! ;)

somewhat similar considering the story, but its in a different industry

im a barber, i have had colleagues that are female. when they are with a client they have to be nice, or its well better to be nice. general customer service pretty much a given, many many many men think "omg they are being nice this means they like me." to only get turned down and confused.

i mean there is a meme literally about this, "just because a waitress is nice meme"

be careful dont get hurt.

In New Zealand we never give a 'tip'. You probably could, but its very uncommon.

I think in America, going from what I see on movies, waitresses get paid the minimum wage and rely on tips to top up their low wage.

I wouldn't get excited because a waitress is being nice.

You're assumption is correct, though I have seen signs that say, "No tipping, please". This is because employees are getting above minimum wage which includes an average amount one would get if receiving tips.

On Topic:

I've heard the saying, "Don't rely on first impressions." In business, sometimes that's all you have to make a judgement. For example: If you had gone into the restaurant and the waitress was annoying, disrespectful, ignored you, didn't anticipate your needs...would you even consider going back? That's first impression.

Every employee is a representative of that business or company. First impressions are everything. So, don't read between the lines something that may not be there. She is only doing her job.

@Tenebrie yeah man, you're right. Being polite is a common courtesy and sort of expected in the hospitality industry being that treating an individual well means a customer is more likely to return also thanks for the well wishes! :D

@Cleanup on 5 I have wanted to go back. I've been thinking it over lately, hammering out the details in my head. So far I've come to the same conclusion of what you have said. The thing is I'm weird about all of that because no one wants to be /that/ guy. You know? It seems kind of disrespectful to a degree, at least in my book. I mean sure if it was in casual interaction and we were just strangers or something it may not seem as weird.

@Kiwi actually waiters/waitresses are paid BELOW minimum wage. If we don't tip folks will absolutely struggle. In my state, servers make about $2.13 per hour. It's ridiculous especially since those places make BANK. Even if the service was bad it's generally a good idea to tip because we don't know what could be going on behind the scenes, whether they are short staffed, have a lot going on in life + mega issues at work, it could be anything so always, always pay tips.
