Kiwi,

Why are you so upset? This is a philosophy thread so read the room a little... You should be logically sound.

Take a hint from Averia Light's post: "Better doesn't mean better for everyone, it means worse for some."

In fact, statistically speaking, even if it were the case that Steven King could write faster by handwriting, your quote would be inappropriate as a broad sweeping statement. In this case, it would be, "Better for one, worse for most."

Furthermore, it doesn't matter if your mother is a librarian. In fact, it's quite possible for someone to be a librarian and be an inadept writer. Also, even if she were an okay or even good writer, it would say nothing about your ability as a writer nor further substantiate your original quote.

It's a very odd and fallacious appeal to authority which simply doesn't make any sense.

It's okay to be wrong. It's okay for Stephen King to be wrong even. What's not okay is an unwillingness to learn from counter examinations by others.

Here's another common fallacious appeal to authority...

"Creationism is true. I have a PhD in Biology, so I'm correct."

It's like... Mmmmm, no. Sorry. People who make such claims are setting themselves up to get Richard Dawkins'd.

For anyone unfamiliar with Richard Dawkins I've left you a little snack:

Sorry, I've only just seen your response. All I really meant by it is that we ought to write things down more instead of rely on memory. Super simple, I know, but! it's the whole reason our species has been as successful as it has. The old 'chinese whispers' approach of word-of-mouth story telling VS 'set in stone' communication. History / writing down past discoveries, etc. so that the future can benefit / not repeat our mistakes, etc.

That thing you brought up about Stephen King is interesting! Kinda reminded me of what I heard the lead singer of R.E.M say in an interview once - He'd write down lyrics to a song, and he'd keep or discard the work depending on whether or not he liked his handwriting that day, lol. Leading to him typing everything out.

I know the quote is not very profound but it inspires me regardless. Plus I'm quite forgetful! :P

Also, let me save you some pain; if someone is being a jerk, don't acknowledge them.

I'm not upset, and I'm not always logical. I just don't like it when someone can not understand the most basic of statements.

But that's ok, maybe its me at fault.

Yea, I'd say it's you. Phil demonstrated a good understanding of what you were saying and offered an apt counter position. Again, it's okay to take corrective feedback and improve your reasoning abilities.

Umm no, 'Phil' did not demonstrate a good understanding of what I was saying. In fact you could be 'Phil' for all I know.

Please step aside and let 'Phil' speak for herself.

What exactly did they not understand? You just sound upset that your reasoning was examined. Maybe they've moved on because they understand there is no reasoning with someone who makes emotive and fallacious appeals to authority - which would arguably make them a bit wiser than me. :P

Phil did say, "An appeal to one's own authority is the tactic of the intellectually outclassed."

I find it amusing this was stated well ahead of time. It's almost as if they found such people... Predictable.
