On page 146 of Anvil of Stars. I skipped ahead to around halfway mark, and the crew figures out "fake matter", which is used and made in a pretty interesting new concept I haven't read before. They meet aliens that breathe oxygen, but are "aggregate intelligences" that are black colored giant worms that separate into non sentient components with three genders. These aliens exude scents depending on their emotions and state of mind and I'd be terrified of them even when they are acting friendly by crawling onto and under you as greeting, I avoid getting near worms as I find them too slimy. These aliens are however dry skinned and slightly warmer about 50 celsius, so this will be interesting to see how they team up with the crew.
I didn't like Hull Zero Three or Vitals and I couldn't finish his first Halo book despite being a fan of the other Halo books because the story took too long to get started. I read the wiki article for Eon and it seems it completely flew over my head, this book went off on a tangent that I wasn't following. Overall the author isn't as super hard science fiction as Greg Egan, who most would actually need to visit his website to at least get a basic understanding of his various works but I'm starting to like Greg Bear more and more. Completing his bibliography still isn't my top priority but there are some books that I'd get first.
