Various celebrities have become known as advocates for certain causes, or been censured for sharing their views.

For example: Terry Pratchett was an avowed humanist, J K Rowling has commented on transgender issues, and Gina Carano has posted much political comment on social media.

But my question is....

Does being famous for something give you the right to comment on issues that are far removed from the source of your fame? (Does being famous give you greater insight to life in general?)

Or does being famous give you the responsibility to do so? (Does being famous give you a platform to highlight social issues?)

In other words, is it appropriate for celebrities to use their fame as a soapbox? Or should they keep quiet and stick to what they're good at? Do we overvalue the opinions of celebrities? Is 'celebrity culture' to blame?

What do you think?

anyone should be allowed to share their views. just because person x got famous for doing one thing doesnt mean every single thing they then make public has to do with that...

if they have a platform to push an idea or anything then of course they are going to use it. i would / do.

being famous comes with young people (especialy children) looking up to you to set an example.

and yes celebrityculture is to blame

this is cutting very close to political considering it can go down that road.

The more fame celebs have the more of a danger they are to the World. After all if they have several million followers and say the stupidest thing then the chances are a lot of them will try it out and follow it.

Now if Joe Bloggs says something with 1-2 followers then they won't give a damn really. He is a nobody that nobody cares about.

Celebs for me need to keep their personal feelings to themselves as it causes way too much E-Drama. Might look good for views and comments but can often lead to a celebs downfall.

Some celebs have way too much power when it's their fault for mouthing off the wrong thing or it's taken out of context.

Best if they keep quiet. ;)

The way I see it is - being famous for being, say, a popular singer does not mean that you are no longer the same person you were before you were famous. You'll still have the same views you held before fame and I think it's unreasonable to expect famous people to not talk about anything other than that which made them famous.

Celebrity Culture is not a new thing - there have been Royal patronages granted since who knows when; famous persons throughout history have openly backed various causes.

Doubtless some good has come from this - for instance David Attenborough being famous as a TV personality has brought the attention of millions to bear upon the calamitous state of pollution, deforestation, the natural world etc.

The downside is the rise of empty-headed 'Influencers' who are usually famous for absolutely nothing other than scrounging for freebies and endorsing products and causes for a fee. These people are a pox but unfortunately looked up to by equally vacuous individuals (springs to mind the 'Influencer' who thought it a good idea to use Gorilla Glue aerosol on her hair when she'd run out of hairspray ....)

Anyway, I believe it's up to individuals to remember that celebrities are just people same as everyone else and to make up their own mind whether a cause is worth supporting.

Tall order, I know.

I think in some instances, their platforms can be used for good. It can elevate social issues people face and don't have a voice to speak up etc but it's a fine line to walk.

If they're projecting their own views and opinions then that can often be problematic but should they give their platform to someone who has real experience of something / a particular issue, then that's when it can be powerful.
