Apple are expected to announce (among other things) the Iphone 14 later today
at 10 am PT (6pm UK).

I'm seriously tempted , my trusty old XR is a bit slow compared to newer models.
My contract is up soon so I'm hoping O2 will be able to do a decent price.

I know the new model won't be cheap, Apple stuff never is... if it's ridiculous, I'll probably snap up one of the outgoing models.

Anyone else tempted to make a new purchase?

I think my husband is going to get the new one.

I'll have to have some serious incentives to switch. I've thought about it before, and I've been tempted, but I like the customisability of my current phone (S21 Ultra), including being able to have my apps in a specific order and I'm hesitant to give that up.

I'll be sure to check it out though!

I've never owned an Apple product... I don't think so anyway, I go with Android when it comes to phones. And my PC's and lappys have all been Microsoft Windows.

But I know Apple are a good product... just expensive.

I guess it depends on what you want to do on your device.

I don't care about the brand of my electronics, so I'm not gonna spend 50% extra just for it to have a rotten apple on the back.

Yep, the new iPhones do as well apparently.

I started watching the event but gave up after 30 minutes of someone banging on about the new Apple watch, they were just repeating themselves over and over.

The Iphone 14 does seem interesting, particularly the Pro models.
Not a radical change in design but several new features.
They now have a 48 MP camera :O

I'll stick to my trusty Samsung S10e (bought used). It does more than everything I need it to!

The camera is nice on the iPhone 13, I can't imagine them improving much on it in a year. I wouldn't waste your money, unless you're only happy when you have the latest and greatest (in which case you'll never be happy). I was like that with cameras. I'm always reminded of the pareto principle with tech, +80% cost for +20% results. If you're thinking of jumping from 11 to 14 then maybe? though it's none of my business how others spend their money. One man's rubbish is another mans treasure, etc.

48mp sounds impressive on paper but it's the 'quality' if the pixels that matter too. They'll have to do S&R firmware magic. Would you rather have a lot of crap pixels or fewer great ones? Not to say it can't have both, but generally (in photography) when one thing goes up another thing comes down. It's all about compromise. I reckon its low-light ability wont change much (which is objectively more important). I also wonder if autofocus has been improved. If 48mp is their 'headline' I'd give it a wide birth. IMO.

Usually the lower a sensor's megapixels, the higher the pixel-pitch (?) (it's been ages since I nerd'ed out on photography stuff, I can't remember all the terminology). But anyway, long story short, higher megapixels are only really useful if you crop your images A LOT. Or if you print billboards (lol). If you're thinking 'futureproof for 4k' 12mp is 4000x3000.

I shot weddings professionally for 5 years. Started on a 12mp, then went to 21mp, then back down to 16mp. And that's fairly recent (past 3 years). There's perks to having lower megapixels (not that you should seek it out exactly), it's just the consumer world just don't hear about it much.

Imagine having to downsample all your massive 48mp files to show online (where most people view at 1080p). For context, a 3mp camera out resolves 1080. I could probably ramble on for ages so I'll stop myself here.
