Medical billing is its own unique niche, but I am thinking he means that people will bear the brunt of the cost of the uninsured regardless of which system is chosen because in the US, they can't turn away someone who needs medical assistance. Whether this person has insurance or not, is irrelevant in if they will receive care. These costs just don't go away, they flow through to, say, operating costs, which since many are municipalities, it hits another niche, government finance.

Then, ofc, there is always the bankruptcy system for the hospital to seek payment...but...It is a convoluted mess that varies greatly from person to person.

Only in emergencies, i.e. life & death situations.

There have been several times when I took my mom (who is in her 70's & insured) to the hospital & they did turn away ppl w/o insurance. She actually gave another old woman 20 bucks for a cab one time, because the old woman had come to the ER by ambulance & once she got to the hospital, the docs found out the old woman wasn't insured & turned her away.

I do, but I know that this is an international public forum and if I don't specify, then people may assume that I am talking about another country.

I did mean in situations where immediate medical attention is a necessity, my apologies. Doctors make judgement calls on if they do or don't want to do surgeries all the time. My own grandma shopped around for a doctor that would say yes to a very risky surgery (several doctors did say no and she had insurance).

By turning people away until it becomes an emergency must make it more expensive to treat them.

It would be interesting to know what Health System other countries have.

I am thinking that only some hospitals do this.

Everytime I went to an ER, they didn't ask about insurance until later. I did not have a life or death situation, but they were all situations where I couldn't exactly wait to schedule an appointment. For instance, I needed stitches once and I stopped bleeding before I even got to the ER. I still wasn't checked for insurance until after.

As far as other doctor offices, I'm not sure. I needed care and didn't have insurance a few times. I scheduled an appointment and they knew upfront that I didn't have insurance, but they still treated me and gave me a prescription for muscle relaxers. Yeah, the bill was costly but I wasn't turned away. Obviously, I only know the situation with my personal family doctor though.

interesting. the last 4 times i went to the ER they wanted all my information before they would help me. tho for me it was also not immediately life threatening. was just a broken leg, broken arm, needing an IV and morphine because i was very sick, and torn ligaments in my knee. tho for all 3 of the physical injuries i wasnt bleeding and the nurses all told me i wasnt even hurt before they saw my x-rays. back then i was on my dads millitary insurance which was really good

now if i get hurt id better hope it kills me. tombstone and coffin would be cheaper

Don't know what to tell you. The ones around here don't appear to ask for that information up front.

Whenever I admitted someone to the hospital for heart attacks, diabetic shocks, or anything that required the person to stay and the like, they never asked up front either. They always had the medical billers get the information bedside.

Idk this is just how my local ones work. Is it subject to policy, maybe?

might be. my last 4 ER trips were all to the same hospital. was probably easier for them to just have me fill out everything while in the waiting room anyway

Maybe, idk!

Another thing I thought of was during death. I don't actually recall anyone asking for insurance papers at all. But yet again, they gave us a lot of other papers, so I am sure there was enough information for them to figure it out.
