Out of curiosity, do Americans get a State Pension, paid to them by the Government?

Here we pay a percentage of our wage (deducted before we get our sticky fingers on it), part of which funds a Pension for everyone over retirement age - that's currently 66 for women and I think 67 for men.

There's a few Tiers thrown in - you have to contribute for a minimum of (I think) 35 years to be eligible for full state pension. If you have not you still get something but at a reduced rate.

It's not a King's Ransom ..... I doubt people would be able to live well on it. It's about £700 ($950 or thereabouts) something a month atm. So I guess most people here take out private pensions also, maybe invest here and there in something-or-other too.

We have something called Social Security that automatically gets deducted from our paychecks. It is supposed to go into a fund that we can withdraw later. But, skipping the politics, the fund likely will deplete so even my generation likely won't see any of it.

Ah yeah, I forgot about that. I doubt any of us young'uns will see any of that alleged social security the old people talk about. It's practically a unicorn, even for existing retirees I think.

I'd find that a bit scary tbh.
People moan and groan and criticise what we have in the UK but, compared to many, it's epic.
I suppose I've been spoiled, really, taking for granted things like free health care even when it involves major surgery and long term care, a financial safety net for the elderly ..... so on and so forth.

It's a sobering thought to contemplate that so many people in progressive and even quite wealthy countries have none, or few, of these things :|

Unfortunately, discussing what happened dives deep into that "politics" topic we aren't supposed to discuss.

But yeah, I agree. On the highest level withoit diving too deep into politics, America is fucked in so many different ways it isn't even funny. I made it out of poverty, but it cost me 10 years of my life and now I am a part of a privileged group I can't really relate to...at all... because they have always been privileged and simply can't understand why, say, working isn't a choice for others.

It's really a shame. As a kid, I was fairly privileged in the sense that nothing was really a struggle, but no fancy cars either, but as an adult it's a lot harder. I'm so far into the habit of NOT buying things I might NEED or whatever just for the sake of having that little extra bit of cash because well, you never KNOW what could happen next. Or always looking for cheap alternatives because the thought of just buying something is outlandish as hell.

I hope that I won't have to always be like that.

I reckon once I start working again, I might treat myself to a new pair of jeans or something.

Well listen to us. Three jokers from Rants having a serious conversation.
Who'd have ever thought it, eh :P

Anyway - smug winkyface post - how u do dat? There's no copy/edit function available after a thread's locked is there? Or maybe there is, idk. I was never the most attentive person when it came to "How To ....."

I recall Twillow trying to teach me - long time ago - how to achieve somethingorother function. I never mastered it, lol
