I used to think that too, when I was a youngster :)
It seemed so very far away and all I could see were the years and years stretching out ahead of me while I worked like a donkey to keep the wheels on the wagon.

But, here I am, and in two months time I'll be getting my State Pension. Awsumsauce.
Always assuming Covid don't get me first.

I have never thought about retirement being nice or something to look forward too. Going back to my teen years I certainly didn't plan on my life being where it is...

For those who did it right and are able to enjoy the golden years it would be something to look forward to.
If fat means flavour then I'm ******* delicious!

Retirement sure sounds nice...

Shame I'll probably never see it. Haha

I used to think the exact same thing. Now my financial advisor is saying we are on track to retire with 2 million if we leave everything all the same (which we are planning on increasing our funds and I am also buying stocks independently).

Honestly, I am just going to pass it on and live a simple life, but I am shocked over how much my life has changed in a matter of 5 or so years. Really, anything can happen. :)
And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

I have yet to meet a single person whose lives turned out exactly as they planned it.

Thank you, lol! I will be sure to spend it unwisely :P

I actually retired from paid employment at about age 55 but that was really to look after my
F-in-L (who had Alzheimer's). I lack the acumen or confidence to have invested in stocks and such but 'made suitable provision' by dabbling in other things - things which I can understand!

We're far from wealthy but, actually, that's OK. The Ole Man still works but he wants to ... he's one of those folk who can't sit still for more than 15 minutes without needing to be doing something productive. Unlike me, I'm a bit of a lazy old biddy these days.

I'm glad that it worked out for you, Aver. You're doing great.

I mean, I've never been put in a position (so far) that I've been able to put anything away for a retirement age.

I did consider it at my last job, but I didn't like the fine print from the investment agency my employer worked with. Outside of that, I needed every penny I could get NOW, not in 50 years.

I really doubt I'll ever be able to practically retire. Not as an average American who hasn't been to university, anyway. No biggie.
Arrr! Only th' Devil an' I know th' where'bouts o' me treasure, an' th' one o' us who lives th' longes' should take i' all.

Out of curiosity, do Americans get a State Pension, paid to them by the Government?

Here we pay a percentage of our wage (deducted before we get our sticky fingers on it), part of which funds a Pension for everyone over retirement age - that's currently 66 for women and I think 67 for men.

There's a few Tiers thrown in - you have to contribute for a minimum of (I think) 35 years to be eligible for full state pension. If you have not you still get something but at a reduced rate.

It's not a King's Ransom ..... I doubt people would be able to live well on it. It's about £700 ($950 or thereabouts) something a month atm. So I guess most people here take out private pensions also, maybe invest here and there in something-or-other too.

Shucks. I meant to say that to be encouraging. Just never know what could happen.
