I'm a little frustrated. I mostly just want to vent, and if it isn't appropriate for the forums or whatever, just hide the post. I'm not looking for solutions, I'm mostly just complaining.
Anyhow....
I have a 12 year old cousin. Her mother is on the overbearing side with very stereotypical girly interests. From my FB observations, my cousin takes after that,
to an extent
. My cousin, much to my aunt's chagrin, is very interested in anime. No biggie. My aunt doesn't know anything about it, besides the fact it's Japanese, and doesn't seem to want to learn.
Now, it's not so much an issue that she's into anime, it's more the anime she's been watching. Can confirm that the one she seems to be the most into at the moment has really mature themes... I watched it myself. I don't personally think a 12 year old should see it, but that doesn't matter now. It's been watched.
On a similar note, I don't think my aunt has spoken a word to my cousin about internet safety in the slightest. :L I found a twitter account, and a fb account with her name (it's an unusual name) on them and... it's just painful to watch. The internet is objectively not a safe place if you don't know how to protect yourself. My aunt is more upset by the fact that my cousin doesn't want to be dressed like a doll anymore.
I haven't seen my cousin in seven years. For some reason, my whole side of the family (uncle's) isn't exactly allowed to interact with them. This included the alienation of my grandmother before her passing five years ago.
I wish I could be involved with my cousin and help her navigate the trials of the internet, but it's hard when her mother is clueless, overbearing, and uninvolved all at once and (not so subtly) doesn't want her daughter to interact with us.
I know, I know, I don't have kids so obviously I don't know what I'm talking about. I've heard it a million times before.
Arrr! Only th' Devil an' I know th' where'bouts o' me treasure, an' th' one o' us who lives th' longes' should take i' all.
