...I am vehemently against people using them when in my presence too. Unless they have a legitimate reason to use one. Such as an emergency.
I also find it rude texting or talking on the phone when your in company, unless the person says they are expecting a phone call or like you said it's an emergency.
That's a pet hate of mine too, it's so rude.
I've even seen shop staff continuing to talk on the phone or text as they serve someone - and vice versa, a customer who can't put their phone down for three seconds while they order something.
As for using while you're out in a restaurant, there's an answer to that:
Pile all phones in the middle of the table, first one to check theirs pays the bill.
There is an exception at Christmas time and birthdays, as you may have friends, relatives/family that you need to speak too.
My Children are sometimes at there fathers for these occasions and it's nice to be able to talk to them on this day - even though he often doesn't let me, by not answering the call or stating he never received it or some other bloody excuse.
Also, I use to ring or she (my late Grandma) would phone on Christmas day, birthdays and if you are with company on certain situation it's acceptable.

i like to pretend to be texting or calling someone when i'm around idiots i dislike
I place my left index finger on my left ear, and then hold up my right index finger towards people who are trying to talk to me. A quick "shhh" and a look of intently listening is all that is needed. Repeat as required.
