Yes, I completely understand where you are coming from and totally sympathise with your grief. I have also lost close family members to the disease and have been unfortunate enough to have had it myself.
It's painful and it's frightening, it's terribly upsetting on a personal level. It's brutal.
However, I have also lost friends and family to other illnesses. Would I wish to see the expression "I nearly had heart failure" removed because I lost my Uncle to that? Or "This ....(thing).... is driving me demented" because I lost my father-in-law to dementia?
No, of course not. It would be unreasonable to expect people to make changes in the way they speak or write in order to accommodate my personal feelings and experiences.
Particularly since Nexus was not referring to the disease itself, rather the alternative, legitimate meaning.
Censoring a legitimate word or expression on the grounds of personal experience is just wrong, no matter how devastating those personal experiences were.

That's okay Fifi, we differ on the matter - let it go!
I find the word offensive and that is ok.
No cancer is not an offensive word, but the way some use the word can make if offensive, that is like retard and many other words.
No, I don't want to let it go actually. Because it is people just like you who, through their ignorance of the meaning of words or language, cause trouble for others.
You are basically accusing Nexus of using an offensive word - retarded. It is no way imaginable offensive when used in the way he did; in relation to his vehicle. Yet you see it as offensive.
Similarly his use of the word - cancer. Totally not an offensive word, merely the name of a disease or a condition/thing that spreads pervasively.
It is only your personal perception of the word that makes it offensive. Your perception is flawed.
I personally find the word hard to stomach for several reasons. Some of which I can tell you and some I can't tell you about for very personal reasons.
So here goes. Wish me luck as this is very hard to type out for me.
My Mother had cancer 3 times and in the end she died in 2005 due to shit doctors and nurses. We as a family were gutted because all the doctors told her she would be ok. They lied through their teeth to cover up a botched job removing a tumor. While removing it they burst it and didn't have the balls to tell my mam anything and kept saying she is fine. It wasn't until a year or so later when she got another lump. They then told her she had a few months left. We were gutted because of the lies and cover ups of the quacks. Now I didn't find this out until last year when my Dad was dying of cancer too. On his death bed he told me everything that happened to my mam and when I found out I was so angry I punched the hospital wall and the dint should still be there.
My Dad passed away last year due to complications of the treatment he had. He tried his very best to fight it but sadly he lost that fight. Just wiping tears away. So to see the word used on the forums really does hurt peoples feelings. I know Nexus meant no harm whatsoever and I totally get what he was after with the thread title but everybody has to understand seeing the word used brings back so many distressing memories of loved 1's we have lost or are losing.
Making this post has really got to me and I can feel the tears now. But I had to post telling you the reasons why I trully hate seeing that
Wow, ok. I'm really sorry to hear about your parents.
I think it is a reasonable change since someone in the community has been so profoundly impacted. I mean, after reviewing this, it is just a matter of being kind to others within the community as opposed to fighting off the idea that it might offend some stranger.
And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

The issue for me is that someone with the power to do so censored the perfectly legitimate word, and it's use in a manner not related to the human disease, on a subjective basis due to their own personal experiences. That decision is being upheld on purely subjective grounds.
I always imagined Moderation was done objectively.
Yes, it may be a kind act to omit, or alter, the word and Nexus may very well have done so had he been spoken to privately and presented the reasons. But he wasn't given the chance.
It was a case of "That word upsets me so I'm getting rid of it - because I can".

Have you ever looked up the word in the dictionary? Perhaps if you took a moment to look up the definition of the word "retard", you would realize that it isn't an offensive word, unless you're using it to directly offend someone.
A fire retardant blanket isn't a blanket that is stupid about fire... it is a blanket that slows the spread of fire.
A motor that has been retarded isn't a motor that has been made stupid... it is a motor that has been intentionally slowed down to a specific speed.

The ONLY reason you find the word offensive is because you're ignorant about the actual definition of the word.
People are far too sensitive, if a single word offends them, especially if it is in any context. If such a thing offends them, they must not live in the real world.
Anyone that behaves like that, I cannot take seriously as a fellow human being. Zero respect.

fmods never seem to find the word cancer so upsetting when in the breast cancer awareness threads
or the fact that users reading such a thread will be reminded about people they know having died or survived cancer and as such might be upsetting is again ignored.
Posted about such things on the fmr a number of times over the years now might be the time a jmod understands...
