Means the govt can't jail you over unpopular ideas. It's nice to not have a annual shrinking list of what you are allowed to say without getting jailed.

Shouting fire in a crowded theater and fighting words have always been the exception.

People are usually hypocrites with the concept. You're free to say whatever until the firestorm of outrage emerges and the person is forced to bow their head in apology. So I don't the concept will ever actually work in reality.

And what about Christian fundamentalism who basically view the world the same as Islam fundamentals (restrict access to progress). If you're going to put Islam in the argument, you might want to put in Christianity in there as well.

I'm against all religion, I just happened to think Islam is the worst one in the world right now.

Let me add that free speech only means that the state shouldn't punish people because they say something that goes against their agenda. It does not mean that the state has an obligation to protect you when you say something which upsets a group of people.

Say whatever you want, but don't expect the taxpayers to pay for your protection when you say something that a group of people don't like. Your school indoctrinated you. Wake up.

I don't like what you said therefore I have the right bash you and the police shouldn't have to protect you from me? Is that what you're saying?

free speech is probably the most important thing to successful human interactions and prospering civilizations; not acknowledging this is so scandalously destructive and insane that those who fail on the topic of free speech should really be put down. for better or worse free speech as a concept tolerates this kind of self-destruction, so it's incumbent on individuals and groups to excoriate all anti-free speech sentiment.
