Berserk was probably the movie I can complain about the least. I'm told the movie is terrible compared to the original, but having not seen it I really couldn't complain. Only real criticism I have was that the CG animation is really blatantly obvious against the regular stuff, which is always a real immersion killer for me. Overall, this film was meh.
From Up on Poppy Hill is my first exposure to works by Studio Ghibli, and was also meh. I felt like the main plot, the romance, was often overshadowed by the secondary plot of the series, which involves the students of a school trying to lobby against a decision to tear down a dilapidated building that gets used for school clubs. Had a bit of a hard time figuring out who alot of the characters were in the end, but it wasn't terrible.
Children Who Chase Lost Voices was most impressive for its theme, a unique spin on Aztec religion (which interests me because its a topic I did in school at one point). The movie itself was pretty meh though, typical fantasy adventure stuff. It was a Shinkai work, so I knew it would look nice and it didn't disappoint there, but I found the ****** questionable because it broke characterization, and left a fair few questions which were kind of significant unanswered (like, what type of organization is Arch Angel exactly and how come the Japanese government is letting them fly gunships around the country).
Finally, Wolf Children, which was low on my radar originally (didn't know who the director was at that point) and can I just say that I LOVE THIS FILM! MADMAN, BLURAY, NOW! It's about a woman who falls in love with a wolfman, they have two kids and then he dies, and the movie is about what the mother goes through trying to raise two children who are part wolf, part human, as well as the children's having to come to terms with the duality of their own nature, and which aspect of their life they want to embrace.
