*suppresses scream of pure terror* It's soooo much better if you watch the original before the After Story. It gives you more time to get the feeling that you know the character, thoroughly, and the events that then happen in After Story take even more of a toll on your heartstrings. Forgive me for explaining this in such detail like a complete nerd, but Clannad is my favorite anime. (It's mainly After Story that I liked, but seeing as they're two parts of the same story I usually group them together.)

^ Yeah, watching Clannad beforehand definitely helps you bond with characters so the devastation is a greater impact in AS. But, AS is vastly superior to the first season. I would say it's around my 30th favorite anime?

@raikenzera I think clannad show plenty of hints/spoilers for after story tbh. The intro for example. They show ushio running in the sunflowers. Also if you pay attention to the music played in clannad you'll notice 1 of the songs played in clannad is the opening theme song for after story. Apparently the creators of clannad loved listening to eufonius.

The main reason i just watched the first season of clannad because i wanted to see more of Nagisa while she was alive. Also to see everyone together. After they all graduated, i got a bit of an empty feeling after not seeing them for a while.

But see, when you're watching the first season for the first time you don't know that those are spoilers because you haven't seen AS yet (or at least you weren't supposed to). Either way, yes, I did notice they had a few foreshadowings in the first season.
Edit: And the empty feeling is part of the experience of Clannad. For example, in the first season, Sunohara annoyed the crap out of me. He was funny every now and then, but he just never shut up. Then, in AS, when everything's all gloomy and sad, he shows up and I realize, I'm actually relieved. The empty feeling of no one really being there to brighten things up just ended up making me love the show even more.

I was hoping that there would be a third season for it but seeing that the ending on after story was good enough, I doubt that there will be. What i really want to see is a second season for Angel Beats. Angel Beats is number 1 on my top 5 fave anime list.
