Woot! My copy of the first special edition Madoka Magica arrived in the mail today. Theres a small ding in one of the corners of the box, really wish Rightstuf would stop using those tiny cardboard boxes with paper for packing material when they are shipping single items, they would be fine for domestic but when its oversea's mail and in transit for two to three weeks its really not safe enough.
Be nice if they offered EMS, I don't mind the extra price for the extra speed (and therefore a lesser chance of damage). Ah well, dosent matter, im planning on buying the first (or was it second) DVD when Madman releases it here so I can get the hardcase artbox (rather than the flimsy things Aniplex uses), which will mean ill have three copies of volume one lol (The Australian release on DVD, the US release on DVD and BD and the Japanese release on BD).
Since so much redrawing and editing for the home video release i'm watching both the BD and the fansubs at the same time with about 1 second difference, playing spot the difference. The home video version is definitely nicer looking, and has brighter colours, and most of the edits are good, though there are some places I like the TV version more, such as the opening sequence (the sky is whited out in the home video version, where-as it was darkly clouded on the TV version) and Mami's apartment (the TV version is bleaker and less colorful, which I thought more fitting to the shows tone).
There's one spot were the people who were doing the editing screwed up, though I probably wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't looking at the art closely. The bit in the first ep were Madoka has a flashback to the dream sequence in the opening still has the brown clouds of the TV version in it.

Shame that they didn't include the cast interviews audio tracks. Still, not really missing much I expect since Japanese cast interviews are usually pretty boring,"this character is voiced by X, I worked with him on anime's Y and Z and blah blah blah uninteresting blah", really wish they would talk about the actual anime episode often.
Aniplex seems to make a habit of leaving out commentary tracks, not an issue here as I said, but leaving them out for OreImo *shakes head* the commentaries for that show are better than the show itself.
Other stuff, a couple of postcards that have the next episode preview artwork on them (does anyone ever actually use these as postcards. Why make them postcards if nobody uses them for that? For that matter, does anyone even actually send postcards anymore?) plus one postcard that has Kyubey on it that says something like 'I want you to be my magical girl'. Valentines day card in other words, it was scheduled for release on valentines day, so its appropriate, although mine shipped a week early. I think that was a free gift from Rightstuf , not actually part of the pack, since it was separate and my invoice listed a free gift).
A few stickers that I'll not ever use so as not to make the set 'incomplete', but I am sorely tempted to stick the 'make a contract with me' one on the back of my car ( I wonder if I can get that reproduced...), the artbook (which is kinda redundant for me since I have that book of production art that weighed several kilo's, and the next 6 volumes on preorder. You don't wanna know what the shipping for that is costing), and the all important CD (of which I also now have 2 copies). Pretty much only listen to Credens Justitiam (Mami's theme) on that one since I prefer Kajiura's lighter works.
And a funny side note, what was written on the customs declaration on the box. Most of the time companies just write DVD or CD, they wrote 'recorded optical media for repro' and something equally long for the postcard :P

So, after reviving all my grades to their original A's, I'm getting back into watching anime seriously again. This week, I'm watching C3, here are my first impressions:
Episode 1: Hmmm, pretty lighthearted and funny.
Episode 2: Getting a little more into the plot, looks like things are about to get interesting.
Episode 3: Woah, awesome!
So far I've watched through the 5th episode and still really enjoying this anime.

Yup, I bought it lol. It's fairly pricey, but its still not the most that ive ever payed for an anime. There have been times in the past were ive been trying to track down single disk releases and ended up having to pay upwards of *100 just because one of them is so bloody hard to find. Madoka as a franchise has officially claimed more of my money than any other anime though, nudging 970 dollars at the moment....
