Anime has a continuous plot, as opposed to American cartoons, which normally are short two-part stories that generally ignore timeline and current relations. The quality of both side's stories, however, purely depends on the creativity of the writer(s).
American cartoons have a large variety of art styles, but the frame rate is poorer as opposed to most modern Anime shows (such as ones from Bones). In exchange, Anime tends to be short lived (22-26 episodes), though It's not because of money issues, just their idea of managing their programs.
I find that a lot of Anime shows have some EXCELLENT music, especially ones like Full Metal Alchemist and Soul Eater. The Japanese have plenty of natural-born singers, and little-to-no mixed-genes to mutate voice boxes :P
I don't watch many American cartoons anymore (besides an old Spongebob episode or two) while I've become unexpectedly addicted to Anime @_@.

oo this is tough i would have to say anime since you can easily watch it as a kid and still like it when you grow up.(like DBZ, sailor moon, pokemon, digimon and yugioh)
Some cartoons that i enjoy:
young justice (highly recommend)

Avatar the last airbender (also legend of korra when it comes out... it will probably be my favorite tv series)

im remembering all the old cartoons that i use to watch like powerpuff girls, looney toons, tom and jerry, dextar laboratory, cow and chicken, courage the cowardly dog, the grim adventures of billy and mandy,jonny bravo,cat dog, rugrats, hey arnold,as told by ginger,braceface,kim possible, the proud family, ahh memories...

Most hated anime: Gantz. I utterly despise it. They give you hope then dash it away. It was the first and last Tragedy genre I have ever watched/will watch.
Also: Bokura Ga Ita. All of the characters. All of them. The storyline sucks as does the animation. Now, I don't mind the animation much though. I do like older anime as well. However.. Christ are they annoying. PICK THE FRIEND! Christ.. I bashed both of these animes on SOO many forums it's not even funny.

Most hated OP: ALL Naruto Opening. Of the first series.
Most hated ED: Read above. :p
Most hated anime character: The characters from Bokura Ga Ita. Especially the two main ones.
