Im what they call a dubfectionist (Its a term people on ANN made up). I prefer subs by default for a variety of reasons, but the first thing i always do when i buy DVD's is sample the dub. If i find that i like the dub better than the sub, ill watch the dubbed version.
It dosent happen very often that i find a dub i like better. Interestingly enough, theres a pattern for shows that i like the dub better than sub. All the anime i liked the dub for better have a part, even a small side character one, played by Spike Spencer (English voice of Shinji from evangelion).
I have a pet theory as to why some people prefer sub or dub. Ive found that you generally enjoy a subbed version or dubbed version more if that was the version you saw first. My theory states that when you watch an anime, you make your impressions about the character based on what your seeing and hearing.
When you change the language, the new vocal track clashes with your already conceived understanding of the character, and you'll therefore like the second language track you hear less.
Based on this theory, it makes sense that people who keep up with the subbed version as its released in japan are less interested in the dubbed version when its released , because they have already grown used to hearing the subs.
