I don't think they're weird. It's what their in to, it's their choice.. But people shouldn't try to be what they're not.
It's even worse when people call themselves "kawaii" or "otakus"
In Japan, Otakus are actually looked down upon. They're what we would call basement dwellers in the western world.

a) banned
b) a normal spell card, not a trap, you can only activate it during your turn from your hand, unless you were stupid enough to set it a turn before.. And if you're opponent isn't running stuff like Solemn Judgement or Dark Bribe etc, they suck..
To be fair they suck anyways if they're still playing Traditional Format.

Blue Eyes is bad now. Two tributes for a 3000 attack normal monster that will just get bottomless trap holed, or mirror forced, Solemn Warninged, Dimonensional Prisoned or something to that effect. You'd just basically end up -3ing yourself or maybe -2 if you're lucky.

And from this i can see that you have missed a very important point in the whole affair. Often times when a word is imported from a foreign language, it will undergo a series of changes in meaning to better reflect the society now employing it.
The term 'otaku' is probably one of the better examples of this happening in recent times. In japan, it is a negative term used to describe a person who is excessively passionate about something (and some of them are genuinely quite creepy). If i remember correctly, the source of the stigma against anime otaku in japan can be found in the accounts of a murder that occurred, where the press made the 'guys anime collection > murder link' (basically the "all these guns in games are making children more violent" argument) , and its just kinda evolved from there.
In the west however, we dont have that deep seated unease which has remain ingrained over the generations and as such the meaning and attached stigma bears no reflection on the words western connotation, where it would be used to denote a person who was a 'hardcore' fan, as opposed to a casual fan, genre specific fan or collector.
Because of the lack of attached stigma, the western connotation of otaku is a positive term. I wouldn't hesitate to use it to describe myself in any English speaking country (because its true...)
