Okay folks, time for an update on my Yu-Gi-Oh progress. Every once in a while, I'll give my thoughts on the series so far.
So right now, I'm going through Duelist Kingdom. Pretty okay start to the series, Exodia being little more than a plot device notwithstanding. Yeah, I know, they could only have Yugi use Exodia in so many ways. But when you build up this awesome monster only to have it rendered unusable literally three episodes in, it's kinda disappointing.
So far, my favorite character is Joey. Yes, seriously. At the point I'm at, he's the most developed member of the main cast. His sister gives some pretty nice pathos as to why he's competing and what's at stake if he loses the tournament.
As for the duels themselves...as someone who knows how the actual game works, the liberties they take with the duels can be a bit cringey at times. Examples from so far include...
-Joey summoning Flame Swordsman from his hand (Flame Swordsman is a Fusion monster; you need Polymerization, Flame Manipulator, and Masaki the Legendary Swordsman)
-Summoning in Defense Mode (you can only set monsters face-down in defense mode)
-Summoning Blue-Eyes directly to the field (you need to sacrifice two monsters first)
-Activating traps from your hand (they need to be set first)
-Rex's dinosaurs being weak to fire (This isn't Pokemon! Type advantage doesn't exist!)
-THAT'S NOT HOW CALL OF THE HAUNTED WORKS, BONZ! (look up what it actually does and what it does in the anime)
I do remember seeing an episode from later in the series saying that having to sacrifice monsters is a "new rule," so I'll chalk it up to "the rules are evolving." I know GX adheres to the actual rules a bit better.
