That's what sets it apart from other rom coms, and puts it in a league of it's own. It doesn't rely on blatant humour to tell the story. The humours there, but it has a in depth story driven entirely by real characters, characters you could truly see yourself being in day to day life.
As for the romance, the characters are essentially strugling to learn what exactly the term romance and friendship entails. They are real people, ones you can truly relate to.
Yahari S2 isn't funny at all and is chock full of melodramatic high school bullshit. I had the same issue as Nosword, which is that the two seasons are so tonally clashing they're practically two different shows.
If you want good comedy then I second Nozaki-kun. Seitokai Yakuindomo and KonoSuba are good too.
