It had to be someone the mom knew, and there are only a handful of adult male characters in the show:

Jun (premise is that he's actually innocent)
Jun's dad (has no screen-time so would be unsatisfying)
Sawada (why would he try to stir up interest in his own murders?)
Sensei

They tried to use a red herring to throw the audience off the trail, but there's a lot of other things that point to him and also by process of elimination it had to be him.

Wasn't a very effective red herring, they might as well have put a sign above the guy with 'murderer' on it considering how heavy handed the hinting was. It was so damn heavy I expected HIM to be red herring.

already lowered expectations when I heard it'll be adapted into 12 eps
also the point isn't really guessing who is the culprit (cuz it was obvious with all those clues) but the reason why the culprit did what he did
